Scopes, what are they good for?

Hello! Me with another noob question.

I'm planning to get myself a scope for my m4. But I don't know which would help me the most, any help would be awesome!

First of all, is there a scope forum that talks all about different types of scopes? And what each one's perpose?

I love the idea for outdoor games, but I always end up playing indoor with my team. Is that a scope that would benefit the most for indoor? How about one for outdoor?

Generally speaking, an ACOG (or clone) will do the trick just fine.

4x magnification is perfecr for the engagement ranges you'll have outdoors while being manageable indoors.

You can also get a Docter sight mounted where your rear iron sight would be.

Those are not scopes.

If you want a magnification factor that will be usefull, don't go beyong 4x. Ajustable hunting scope are generally 3x to 9x. We generally use the 3x setting to shoot.

If you play indoor, you don't need a scope. You probably be more effective with a red-dot. Those have no magnification and allow for a better field of view.

I use an Aimpoint for my CQB weapon. It's about 100$ for a good replica.
A good scope for outdoor will cost you about 130$ if you go into a respectable brand like Bushnell. For these type of scope, you need to consider the lense quality first. You could pay less and have more bells and wisles, but you won't see shit out of your scope. Like in a Tasco.

Anyways a RDS (Red Dot Sight) is probably the best general use type of sight for stock and mildly upgraded.

Eotech/Doctor style sights are better for CQB as I'm told for easy target acquisition or something.

Aimpoints and zooming scopes should be used with heavily upgraded guns, sniper rifles, and BA (Bolt Action) rifles. Even then 4x is usually the max zoom you want to go before it becomes too unwieldy.

You can get scopes from pretty much any hunting store or outdoors stores like Canadian Tire, no one will look down on you for using a "civilian" scope (at least I think they won't). I believe there is a Tasco RDS for sale at Canadian Tire for like $25-30.

EDIT: I personally use an RDS for everything since my gun is one of those mildly upgraded guns that's perfect for an RDS and my style of play.

My advice to the noobs i run into Believe me i still am to but i've learned from my mistakes many the hard way.As many of the people above have developed a playing style and the sights you choose should cater to your style, The Red Dot sight is great for close quarters because there easier to line up with your target and they are a lot easier for those who use paintball masks. If you are one of those guys who rush in Id suggest a Red dot. If your a very laid back patient person who would rather touch there target witot being to close go with an ACOG of some type.

Bottom Line: Be patient find your style first and when your at games as RESPECTFULLY of course if you can try out there gun that has a sight, thats how i did I found out im wasnt going to need an acog until i started playing outdoors.

I used to use a Aimpoint clone but got rid of it, I have a bushnell holosight and a replica 4x FTS mount. I dont use either anymore. Front iron sights for daylight games, and I mount the holosight for night games.

As far as scopes not working in indoor games, I beg to differ. You can't use a scope at an instant, but you can make short work of people on the field that are cowering behind something and peak out only for a second. Due to the lack of instant action that a scope has, you're also limited to watching your shots, or even being supporting fire only.

My personal use of a scope in an indoor area worked out quite well. There are some longer stretches that a scope really comes in handy, and can give you the upper hand at times. If you know someone is peaking out every so often just pumping off shots to get your team to keep their heads down, you can just kind of watch the doorway through the scope, and that's the end of that.

Realistically, though, an RDS would be superior for fast-action situations. A scope in fast-action can get in the way since even your iron-sights are hindered.

i would say 90% of the time I dont use a scope or red dot. If your not running a upgraded gun (390 +), a 4x scope is overkill. I use my iron sights or at most a reflex red dot. I have an acog and other sights but barely use them. For indoor again at most a reflex sight but usually i just use my tracer unit and my iron sights. I have used a magnified scope before while shooting 360 and even when adjusted all the way down all I would see is my bb floating then diving under my crosshairs.

The thing is with our indoor area is it's dark, very dark with black lights...

So most of the time I can't see my iron sight... That's why I'd thought I should get a red dotted scope, but if I end up playing outdoor, I don't want to waste the money on a scope that won't help me in the long run.

I use my sights a lot, I love aiming for stuff, IMO make one single kill shot is better than 10 of those "I think I hit you" shots.

Is red dotted scope do good in outdoor game?

I personally use an eotech with a magnifier. I can have the benefit of an rds with the magnification of a scope. And if I decide I don't want to have my magnifier on I use the QD feature and rip it off.

Acog with Docter sight on top is perfect for me, but it depends, I like aimpoints/eotechs as well but I need some magnification, my eyesight is not the best anymore. Some of the aimpoints have 2x or 3x mag if needed.

I use an ACOG with irons on top of it. It's perfect, 3x-4x magnification is all you want anyways and it's not a waste if on ANY gun that can reach at least 100 + feet (most stock guns are able to do this). Also, 3x helps, more than anything, find and identify targets. I have never been on the giving end of a friendly fire incident as I've always been able to tell who I'm aiming at (even indoors, beyond 30 feet it's too hard to see the other guys camo without some sort of magnification). Other choice I use is the stock iron sights on my guns. they are always good and will never run out of batteries.
