Quick-Release holsters - necessary?

Obviously they are preferable, but they are also very expensive and have to be custom for the gun (which adds to the cost).

In practical airsoft battles, do you think a quick-release holster for your backup sidearm is necessary? (necessary, not "preferable").

Not necessary, but like you say, for some people it's preferable.

I have a SERPA holster for my KJW P229, and it's amazing.

Uh no. They're for most popular, normal SERVICE PISTOLS! Not hand cannons.

They're not that necessary for typical outdoor games. Going to secondary is really a desperation move that's usually best preceded by ducking for cover. In my years of playing I can only think of maybe two occasions when a rapid switch to pistol might have been key in saving my ass.

For real life, those two times would have been pretty critical and they'd have justified my having a fast holster for all the times I didn't exactly need one, but if you also counted all the times I've been dead in airsoft too, then I should have gotten armor first.

It's most important for your holster to securely retain your pistol. It really sucks when you lose a gun on the field. Look for a holster which comfortably and securely holds your pistol without shifting in a way that pushes the mag release or see if you can modify it to prevent accidental mag dumping. Sometimes you can trim a bit of material away around the mag release.

Well not really, but if you ran out of magazines or couldn't reload quickly, a SERPA or other quick-release holster would be very good. For example, with my SERPA, I can shoot you while you're still fumbling with your straps and buckles on your holster :P.

Takes me less than a second to draw and shoot.

Regardless how fast one can draw, it can never save you from someone popping out of a wooden podium and shooting you in the bum.

One serious benefit of quick release holsters is when reholstering. Is a pain in the ass to use your pistol, for room clearing or fast defence when pinned on your back and under fire (picture trying to aim an AEG with a RDS on it, and a long mag sticking out making it difficult, easier to just pull sidearm and nail the bastards fast), but quick release holsters tend to be very fast and secure reholstering, no snaps, buckles, etc. to try to put back together to secure your sidearm before moving on.

And re-telling the tale for many many years afterwards.

Not that I have one or anything though. Lol, just know the pain it is to deal with snaps and velcro.

It's best just so your pistol doesn't get lost in the field. I don't know how many people have lost their pistol or mags, due to improper holsters.

I wish I could afford for all safarilands/serpa's for all my pistols.

Yes it's a very good way to keep your pistol secure. The only way I'm going to lose my pistol is if I unholster it and throw it into the bush. :P

But yes....$100 to keep a $300 pistol safe? Might be worth it.
