adapting a radio connector for DEVGRU headset?

I am waiting for my DEVGRU Frogman Headset to arrive and I was wondering if it is possible to modify one of the motorola adapters that you can buy and connect the connector from a Motorola MX300-R speaker mic? I have a couple of MX300-R's and a extra speaker mic that I am willin gto sacrifice. I don't know the technical name for the MX300R connector and I don't see it on AEX's site or on their compatibility list for the adapters, but it's more complicated than a 2-pin adapter and I don't know if any current motorola radios still use it.

Any help is Greatly Appreciated.

Thanks,
Jerold

It shouldn't be hard to wire up an adapter for the headset. At most the connector will use 5 wires, and likely only 3 or 4. If you can find the schematics for the things you are trying to make work with each other I can draw you a diagram of what wires need to go where.

I'll see if I can find anything. The MX300 is pretty old these days and I can barely find any info on them on the web. If I cannot, can you still give me instructions if I cut the mic cord and get another Motorola adapter and cut that to expose the wiring and send you a photo of them?

just opened the box. If it helps any, the DEVGRU headset cable connection is a 6-pin connector. I'll keep looking for any info on the mic cabling.

The DEVGRU frogman headset utilizes what is known as a 6pin "hi rose" universal connector.

Unfortunately I am unaware if the pin out is standard, or they have gone w/ a proprietary pin out like Motorola did w/ their SABER accessory adapters.

It's not so cut and dried. If I had them in front of me I could scope out the wires and figure out what needs to go where pretty easily. Each company uses whatever colour wire they want for whatever connections they are using. There's no real industry standard. That's why the schematic diagrams are incredibly helpful.

sound is great. very clear and no static. Very comfortable on the ear. They rubber cup is soft enough that it molds to the side of your head and you don't even notice it there after a while - and it doesn't move around.
The headnet is a little small - the velcro for the straps that go around the forehead are just making it. and the one that goes over the top doesn't have enough material to properly attach the velcro. Probably like most items made overseas, it was fitted on a korean model (in this case). I am thinking of either finding/getting a real headnet replacement or just making a new one that will fit since I'm pretty handy on a sewing machine or I can just make some velcro extension straps.

I took a closer look at the hirose adapter connector. I don't know if this is proprietary (the actual male/female parts look like the stuff that I found on the web), but the way they connect could've been better. When you plug the adapter into the end of the headset, it clicks into place (it only goes on one way). When it is together, there is some play between the 2 parts (slight wobble). It could've been one where you connect the 2 parts and then turn the parts against each other to lock them together. If your running around in the field and snag the cord against something hard enough, I am guessing that it could just rip apart the hirose connection. If you can, stick the connection into the radio pouch to protect it.

I finally found some service manuals with schematics for the Motorola MX series, but they are really technical and they don't show anything for the speaker mic. I doubt that they would have any diagrams that you need to see, but let me know if you want to look at them. They are PDF's that I can email to you or give you the link to them. The speaker mic that I have is model # NMN6125A. I doubt that I would find anything for the DEVGRU adapter wiring. I'll keep looking....

The schematics may seem like they don't have anything on them with regards to headsets, but they usually do. You just have to know what you're looking for. Feel free to send them to ibby@holycow.com and I can take a look. As for the devgru, I'll bet if you look around a bit you'll find diagrams for that as well.

Thanks, Ibby. Those PDF's are pretty large and I don't know if you want 16MB of PDF files emailed to you. I found the site that has the manuals.
http://www.repeater-builder.com/moto...ies/index.html

Let me know if you are able click to the page. I have the UHF MX300R, but whenever I click on the UHF manual it comes up VHF.

I'll keep looking for the DEVGRU schematics.

Ibby:

I found this thread on another forum.
http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums...ad.php?t=76813

Here's the specific quote regarding DEVGRU:

"heres a (hopefully) helpful addition to this thread for anyone tring to use the hardware (PTT and wiring) from a DEVGRU brand throat mic:

SPEAKER:
BOWMAN= BLUE connects to DEVGRU white
BOWMAN= YELLOW connects to DEVGRU red

MIC-RO-PHONE
BOWMAN= WHITE connects to DEVGRU GROUND SHIELDING AND BLACK
BOWMAN= GREEN connects to DEVGRU GREEN

BOWMAN= RED connects to NOTHING
BOWMAN= BLACK connects to NOTHING
BOWMAN= WHITE SHEILDING connects to BOWMAN GREEN SHEILDING and DEVGRU GROUND SHEIDING

hope that shaves some time off the next persons attempt at that, cuase trial and error took forever.

PS- dont forget to to shield your wiring when your done or you can get interference
-patry"

is it any good?
If this is useful, I will glady cut the Motorola Speaker mic cable to reveal the wiring inside and take photos or give you a list of what's inside.

Yep, it's a good start. Let me get my brain in gear and I should come up with the connections you'll need.

Still working on a diagram to adapt this up for you. Do you have a pic of the connector that goes onto the radio?

Thanks.

I can take a photo of it for you, but I can't figure out how to post photos onto this board. I can email you a few digital shots. I also found another modelof motorola mic in one of my boxes, but it isn't the same as the one that I am planning on using to do the mod. Although, I am able to disassemble to handset and you can see the wires connected to the mic's board. This one has a toggle switch on the mic, but it may be of some use .
I can't figure out how to take apart the MX300 mic (NMN6125A) without using a hammer. I can unplug the cable from the handset and it uses a 4-pin connector. If you can direct me to a link in how to post photos, please send it thru, but I'll email you a set of photos.
