NV Equipment
Howdy folks,
I read through a couple threads on here about NV equipment, but it didn't really detail what would constitute a "recommended" model. What I'm interested in is a NV monocular of somewhat respectable quality, while trying to keep the price in the $500 price point. I realise there is a lot of GEN1/1+ equipment both above and below this price, but I feel that for a hobby, $500 should be enough to get something of decent quality (ie: will last more than 2 hours), but won't break the bank. I've been directed to Bushnell by a couple people, but I'm entertaining alternatives. Ideally, it would be something I can get from a brick-and-mortar company, preferably in Winnipeg, in case of warranty issues. I know that can limit my options, too. Thanks for your help in advance. |

To be totally honest, you're better off saving your money and spending it on a better model, GEN 2/3. There's just only so much gen. 1 can help you with. I've went through 3 units so far, and I'm currently with a set of ANVIS (I believe) goggles in gen. 1. A nice unit all around, but it's still gen. 1, and it cost me way past the $1000. I'm looking to be upgrading very soon. That being said, most all NV is the same, but made by a different company. For the most part, if you're spending $500, you'll be getting an okay piece of kit.
Hope this helps!

The D-112 seems to be the most recommended Gen 1+ unit on the market right now. Acceptable performance, "military" looks (you can remove the 3X magnifier) and a decent price. It also has a head mount available for it which I don't think any Bushnell can claim.
http://www.opticshq.com/Merchant2/me...potting-Scopes By the way, the only Gen 2 that can be exported from the States is anything that says "Mil Spec" and has a tube data sheet. Don't ask me why, I don't understand it either. Other Gen 2 units that don't have a data sheet (or higher generations) cannot be exported without controls and permits. |

This place was good to deal with. I spoke with a fellow over the phone, and he didn't seem too sure of things, but I ordered an NV rifle scope from them without and problems. I wound up getting a GS-19 with a Brit 3rd gen tube to my door for $1800 and change. Dirt cheap for something of that quality. It's been used often and is still going strong. A bonus is they're Canadian, so there's no hassles with exporting crap. They also carry thermal imagers (never got price quote$ on them) which the US won't allow to cross the border, but they're made here. Again no export concerns. Take a look and see what they have. |

Hah, don't bother asking for a quote on thermal imagers. The cheapest ones I've seen START around the $5,000 mark. Elcan thermal imaging riflescopes start at $13,000 USD and go up from there. I'd give my left nut for one but I don't think I'd find any takers.
$1,800 for a Gen 3? Are you serious? |

I've decided to upgrade my tastes a bit, and am looking at possibly picking up a Gen2 unit while I'm in the US next week.
I'll be at Dick's Sporting Goods picking up a Rino 530, and thought I might get a NV unit while I'm there. Time is limited, so I can't do much shopping. It's basically show up, get hardware, pay and leave. Here are the units in my price range: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/fa...0&doVSearch=no I was specifically looking at the PS-14, which has decent reviews from what I've been able to find. My options are limited as to what I can buy anywhere because I don't have a credit card or a bottomless bank account. What are ASC's thoughts on the PS-14? |
