mp5 hicap mag unwinding upon insertion

This didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but then I haven't had a ton of experience with high caps.

I have a TM mp5 and a TM hi cap mag, and I wound it up till it skipped before inserting it into the gun. Then, when I put it in, The spring in the mag unwound, and I'm pretty sure the little wheel spun a bunch of times too. But I didn't get a stream of bbs rolling out the barrel. I just wound up the mag again and it fired ok.

Did I do something wrong to cause this? Should I be inserting the mag, THEN winding it up? - hope that's not too stupid a question

That should not happen at all. You may have a flaky magazine. Have it looked at by someone local.

They tend to do that often, the MP5 mags anyways. Mine do it once in a while, other times it doesn't. If it unwinds, just rewind it in the gun. If it doesn't unwind, give it a couple touch up winds to make sure it's ready to go. Just saying it's a normal occurance with that type of mag (I've had about 3-4 of them over the past couple years, lost one, sold one, have two left that I rarely use. I prefer my locaps anyways since my hicaps sometimes fail to feed, requiring disassembly to figure out why.)

my m-16 vietnam high-cap will do that one in awhile. seem to think maybe the bbs get kinda wedged together and when the 4 bbs move up to fill the gun the gear in the highcap can't grab anymore and spinns out but I could be wrong.

It's supposed to do that.

When you wind it, it tightens the line bbs into the end of the mag. Upon insertion, the bbs are pushed up into the bb feeder that goes into the chamber. Essentially, the mag no longer has the tension it had before the bbs moved, so the spring relaxes a bit (that's the whirrr sound). That's what you're hearing, and that's why if you tighten it up a bit after insertion, it'll regain tension again.

Your mag is functioning normally...I wouldn't tighten it THAT much though...wind it until the wheel feels firm. Not so much that you can't wind it at all anymore.
