How to get into upgrading/tech
I've been wanting to learn exactly how my gun works, and open it up to solve a problem if one presents itself. I'd also be able to upgrade my gun, knowing exactly what I'm doing. Not saying I want to upgrade my gun just yet, but I plan on getting an Echo-1 M16A3 and want to build a DMR. I have an old Lancer gearbox that I can take apart, but I don't want to ruin it, how do I begin upgrading/tech?

Read. Read. Read more. Get an account on AirsoftMechanics. Read more. Watch Youtube videos. Dissasemble and reassemble your old gearbox. Mess your gearbox. Cry. Retry. Break something. Cry. Retry until you get it. Become addicted to airsoft tinkering.

Find a gun tech in your area, and ask him nicely if he would let you sit in on a session with him. Most gun docs are great guys and don't mind sharing the knowledge.

read lots. All the info you seek can be found on airsoftmechanics.com with the addition of a few videos on youtube to help you disassemble/reassemble stuff.

yes.. just do.
things will break, accept it. I've had stuff disintegrate in my hands.. it's airsoft.. shit breaks. spend money to fix it... enjoy it until it breaks again. :P Also helps if you occasionally sacrifice a goat. Or a virgin maiden... but it's better to use 2 goats and keep the virigin.

@op just break some sh*t. try to fix it. you'll quite quickly discover if you're cut out for it or not. in the meantime, READ ASM.

A DPMS Panther or Kraken could be used as a "3D repair guide" to get your hands dirty on.
Also having general knowledge of mechanical systems and how the parts interact with each other is a good start too, and it wouldn't hurt to read up on materials properties if you want to get into more advanced stuff. tl;dr AEG - electrical system which uses electrical potential energy to spin a motor to spin gears to pull a spring and piston system back and releases it to compress some air to propel a plastic projectile. Everything else is just extra parts.

Yeah man like everybody else said, just read up on it and try it out. Breaking parts or installing something wrong is all a part of learning. Crying is also a part of learning (unfortunately). I'll be a man and admit that when I broke my feeding nozzle, I cried, like some wailing baby blues crying.

Like everyone else said, you have to learn by doing, but just make sure you have more than one gun, and don't tinker the day before a game

Good luck on your tech path.

You learn by doing and reading about it will only point you in the right direction. Find yourself a cheap gun and break it down. Lean what each part does and how it function. That's what I did.
