Homebrew Automated Sentry Gun.
This takes airsoft sentry guns to a whole new level. Sure we've seen stationary airsoft guns hooked up to motion detectors, which is inventive no doubt. But they kind of pale in comparison to this sentry gun.
This has more in common with the sentry guns from Half Life or Aliens than anything in reallife. As in it has automatic target acquisition, tracking, and firing. So all you DIY folks out there, time to learn some robotics! Also, if the site is slow I've got the video saved if anyone wants to mirror it. |

I'm offering up programming support for a project like this.. I have a lot of experience in programming in general, and some experience in image processing for target acquisition, IFF (Friend/Foe Identification), and other areas that could apply to this project.
I'm thinking about building the hardware myself as well if someone doesn't feel like doing it. Depends on my work and family schedule over the next few months though. I think it could be a neat addition to some futuristic scenario games (i.e. the Stargate game that's coming up). |

That's some cool shit right there...
I'd like to learn about capturing pixels through a camera like that. |

I wondering if your gun has to pay to get into a game.

That is hilarious!
Combine that turret with DonP's shootable target project: http://www.unconventional-airsoft.co...ive-target.php and you could build an autogun which detects when it gets shot. Maybe 5 hits to sensitive target areas to kill or make it become more inaccurate as hits accumulate before the device goes wild and dumps mag for 5 seconds slewing around in random arcs.

That turret is amazing!!
If it does some little beeps when aquiring targets, it would look a lot like HL2 turrets. I'd like to be able to do that!

Well, they have the phalanx systeme on boat (R2D2 for the intimates). It's a big vulcan style gun with a radar mounted on top that shoot down incomming missils and planes.
On a smaller scale, a remote operated sniper rifle is in service with some units (don't remember which one). Not to mention the new M249 (or was it an M60) on a remote operated robot. Thoses things aren't new, but we don't see them often.

I don't really think of CIWS or armed robots when I think sentry turrets, since my idea of a sentry turret stems largely from what was seen in Aliens. My surprise is at the lack of automated land based direct-fire defence systems, you know, like this: http://www.network54.com/Forum/threa...&lp=1106866532
And somebody just posted this topic again in Airsoft Media.

Those Korean sentry guns are impressive. Other than those ones and the Phalanx systems on naval ships, the closest thing I've seen are these Israeli (I think) "surveillance robots."
I don't believe that they have any automation to them, rather that they are controlled much like tactical robots. As for buddy's DIY airsoft sentry gun? I figure he could do with larger servos, and replace the physical trigger actuator with an electronic switch wired into the wepon (which I assume is possible with AEGs). As for gameplay in the field, I'd certainly hunt down the exact .wav file for the Half Life sentry guns to use. As for disabling them, maybe a large switch or wire to cut, so the opposing team could disable them within the game context. You know, to make things "fair." 8-) I still have the video from the site, if anyone wants to mirror it. It is really worthwhile to see. Just pm me or something. |
