Battery question
So, I finally quit waffling and went and bought an airsoft rifle this morning. No imagine my surprise when I switched it out of safe and squeezed the trigger. There was juice in the battery and the resulting firing startled me. Is this normal for a brand new battery?
I bought a universal smart charger, and would it harm the battery to plug it in and charge it up with whatever charge might remain in it? Or should I completely decharge the battery first? Thanks! |

Picture & stats of your battery/charger & gun?

Even if you fully decharge a battery there will still be energy in the battery or it would be a dead cell would then be ussless. I dont really know how to type it out but if we were talking in person I could fully discribe how batterys works.
I would still stick it on the decharger befor charging it up but it is totaly normal for a bran new battery to have som juice in it. |

Depends if it's a NiCad or NIMH. If it's a NiCad, then you should discharge it first... if it's a Nimh, then it should NOT be discharged.

This is my rifle:
TM Beta-Spetsnaz. This is the other end of things: Random smart charger unit, and an Airsoft Alliance Canada 8.4V 1700mAh Nicad. I am sure that I am just being a nervous ninny about things. Also, I didn't get a de-charger. I was assuming I could run the batteries out like I do with my RC car. |

ahahahahahahahahaha you should attach mr T to your kit somewhere...i sure would. uhh a de charger would be easy to make, grab a plug the same size as the one on your bat, attach a fan to plug, plug into battery...cheap discharger.

if you have a nimh battery, charge it at least twice (3 times ok too) before you even go to use it for the first time. delta-wave peak chargers will detect the battery as fully charged usually right-out-of the-box. you will think it is charged when it is really dead. the second charge will usually take as the electrolyte reaches stable polarization. i've put brand new nimh batteries on the charger for somtimes 45 min at 3 amps on the second charge. that should give you an idea of the current and time needed for the first "real" charge. after that it's usually less than 25 min even for 1700 mah batteries. use a quality charger though, not the $25 plug-in transformer crap.

That sounds like some decent information. Shame about the website downtime though. What ended up happening is that I decided to attempt to decharge the battery by firing the gun. It died after cycling maybe 20 times. Then I hooked it up to the charger, which you can see from the images is not a $25 wallwart. This one was $100 from DEA. Took about an hour, and since then I've played in three games. It seems to be working just fine.
Thanks for the responses, despite their tardiness! |
