Radio Advice Needed

Looking for some input on radios, hoping to get a setup ready for next season.

From what I've gleaned off the forums the Puxing PX888 has been a reccomended option. Can anyone tell me the difference between the KG and D models?

And from what I understand a radio rig requires a transceiver, a headset cable, and a headset. Am I missing anything?

For a headset Im looking at a rig along these lines:



Can anyone point me in the direction of a similar headset?

MSA Sordin Headset.

The hard part is finding the correct downlead/ptt for your radio and headset... If anyone has a decent solution under $200, you let me know. It's the only thing that's put me off buying the Sordin's.

while we are talking about raidos any other good options besides the sordin? Looking for something not too expensive thatll work with a throat mic, maybe with an option for a long ass antenna i can mount on my back through some molle loops(like the one i seen coach usin at the wolfpack game a cpl years back) somethin beter then the crappy tire motorolas ive been using lol.

From what I read Sordins dont work well with Ops Core helmets. Peltors do.

The PT/KEN1/SC would be the one you need assuming you don't want a sniper connection built in. This would probably be one of the cheapest ways to go. You could always call SRS and they might be able to suggest something else too.

Most setups involving military headsets are going to be around $400 or more. An option if you want real Sordins or Comtacs for less money is using a speaker mic with an aux port and buying a set of either Sordin's without the boom mic with an aux port or Comtacs without a boom mic. You will use the speaker mic as the PTT and mic and this will save a lot of money over a comms headset with a PTT. This will still be around $200 or more depending on the headset you choose though.

Cancom Radio Accessories also has a lot of good choices for communications stuff like surveillance wires, speaker mics, bone conduction mics and other headsets.

Another option is always the Z-tactical or element replicas if you want the look without spending the money. Just remember you get what you pay for.

My radio setup which involved real MSA Sordins after getting a Custom downlead for my ptt cost me in the ball park of $700. Thats how much my entire setup cost, and mounting Sordins isn't to too difficult nowadays on the Ops Core rails. I went through Steve at SRS tactical great guy to deal with!

I don't think he meant he wants a real one, there's knock-off ones out there and they're no where near $700 when combined with the radio and PTT. I bought a Puxing PX888KG specifically because it's a dual band radio meaning it can utilize both UHF and VHF. I bought it on eBay cause I couldn't find it in stock anywhere else and am very satisfied with my purchase.

Spend the money on actual Sordins, it is a large chunk of change, but worth it for the clarity of comms, quality of sound amplification, and the knowledge that the comms gear will work...always. One of the locals went the discount way. he now has a $200 set of sordins that cannot transmit what-so-ever.

I will also vouch for Steve at SRS Tactical, super good service and got me set up right the first time.

Plan B is to wait for a gear junkie to be selling their setup.

Side notes:
If you plan to use with real firearms get the real ones.
Try before you buy, some report they have cheekweld issues.

Find your way to an electronics hobby shop. I went to supremetronics. I found adapters to convert my radio and antenna to BNC connectors and then bought a shielded BNC cable.

I went through Steve at SRS to get my sordins working with my Motorola XTS2500.

There were some hiccups but he eventually got everything working.

Not cheap though.

Can you elaborate on the hiccups? I was under the impression the XTS2500 and Sordins were already compatible from a mic impedance point of view so other than getting the pins on the JEDI connector of your PTT down lead correct, I didn't think anything else was necessary? However, I do notice there's two versions of the Sordin commonly floating around on flea-bay: one for high noise and one for normal environments, and the headset connector may be either a standard Nexus plug for use with a U94 type PTT, or a LEMO style depending upon which branch of the military the headset was destined for (Navy/Army). The differences between hi-lo noise may or may not be a factor in getting the headset to work with the radio? I'm still using the NACRE system with my XTS2500 and don't plan to change it.

C3SK and I got our sordins at the same time, we ended up with the lemo connectors.

I am not sure Steve was 100% up on the 2500s at the time and he changed the mic the first time I sent him the headset. He also cut the lemo for a Nexus (YAY!).

I got the headset back and had no TX, I tested the impedance of the mic he installed vs the handset that came with my radio and noticed that the replacement mic he put in was a good 300 ohms below the handset.

Sent the headset back and he put the proper mic in. Everything works fine now.

Thanks for the clarification. OEM Sordin microphone is the correct impedance and all I would require is a proper PTT downlead (U94-JEDI) if I wished to switch from the NACRE. Good to know...
