DIY: shemagh face pro

I was tinkering around with an idea, probably not original at all, maybe some of you already have something similar, but if not check it out.

Took a piece of soft polystyrene and put Velcro on one side and on the shemagh.

put it on like a normal shemagh, when not in combat, pull the face pro down, when it starts, pull it up.

I dont know, I will game it up at shallow lake next weekend, I'll see how it does. I wouldnt use it in CQB at all, but outdoors it might be ok.

My only problem with this type of setup, is my breath usually will come back up through the openings between the shemagh and my nose. That puts warm air on my goggles and then the fogging happens.

It there is a larger space below, that may take care of that. Temp will also play a large part in this.

Have you though of using a metal mesh the same way? Would be more breathable.

I did, I actually did game metal mesh last year... the only problem was it dug into my color bone, mind you it was a lot bigger...

That's really cool...great idea.

I, like probably A LOT of others, pull up a shemagh when contact is likely. Some guys layer it on nice and neat...others just bite on it to keep it in place.

A wadded up shemagh is enough to stop shots and reduce the teeth busting but another layer of something is a great idea. Since it's pretty good on it's own, I wonder if a piece/folder layer of plastic/fiber screen be sufficient and better for airflow (I've always found that they block airflow anyways)?

you know, I did the same thing, when contact is in, pull up the shemagh, or what I could grab, and bite down. But sometimes I did, and sometimes without and its kind of scary. I find that with the polystyrene it kinda sits snug where ever I put it. So if I pull it up, it kind of stays up, because its light, gravity has no effect on it.

Ive got a drawer full of lowers, steel mesh, full, plastic, Im never really happy with any of them, they only "do the job" hopefully this works out. Because I think its somewhat aesthetically pleasing as well.

I've always found that a "wall" of shemagh just fogs the crap out of my goggles. I tend to just "spin" the shemagh into a roll and then bite on that when I think there'll be incoming fire.

A buddy has been using a modded piece of mesh mask...it cut down to not much more than a palm sized cup with a foam rim backing. Simple elastic material. Small enough to flip up/down/out of the way...doesn't block air/comms/etc... Comfy too since it doesn't block shouldering rifles or dig into you anywhere. You'd still take facial shots though...but it's just for protecting teeth.

I sew......attached a cut up mesh mask to the chin strap of my pasgt. Im sure you could straighten out a mesh mash and sew it into your shemagh.

Although I always wore one, these things always restricted my breathing when worn properly.

*edit, and by properly I meant snug.

I fold my shemagh in half diagonally, then I fold it at about two thirds of the way up, then I wrap the sides around my neck with the triangle in front of my face and bring the sides back around and do a simple loose knot in the front to hold it there. If you do it right you don't have to bite it or anything, just pull it up and it'll sit there on it's own.

1 Fold into triangle
2 Centre the triangle on your head
3 Make a half inch fold across your forehead ear to ear
4 Tuck one side your choice behind your ear with the other side holding it in place
5 With the material you have in your hand you can either fold or wrap it
6 With the wrapped/folded material bring it arcoss your forehead and tuck it into that half inch fold
7 So you should have the head piece done
8 To get the veil
9 On the opposite side grab the extra material and pull it out
10 Wrap across face and either tuck under ear or in the fold on the top or if you dont want veil bring it under your chin and tuck it into that fold at the top
11 If you want a basic turban with the veil side wrap it around your head and tuck

You can now tie a Keffiyeh like a pro

ask me if you need help

after gaming this setup I determined that it wasnt for me. Lots of heat, turned into fogged goggles. I guess if you like wearing glasses its probably ok though.

I did something very similar my first season last year - I had to come up with a solution for hardened mouth protection (field requirement) that worked with a shemagh. I used a piece of very soft aircraft aluminium sheeting .. i think in the neighborhood of 1/32" thickness. Beat it into the general shape of my face with a ball peen hammer, and drilled the crap out of it with a 1/16" drill bit in a grid pattern anticipating the fogging issue, and sewed the whole thing into a terry-cloth cover. Attached sticky-sided velcro to it, and Bob's your Uncle for an integrated wrap into a shemagh. Target tested to make sure that BB's wouldn't break through, before use.

It worked very well, no fogging issues. rigid, yet light enough inside the shemagh that it held form and position when pulled up, and easily pulled down with no deformation or interference with cheek weld when up, or my neck when down.

Didn't use it this season, as the field that i went to doesn't require mouth protection, but it's still in my kit bag as an effective piece of PPE, should i need it. Much more comfortable and effective than your standard mesh mask (got one of them also, and hate it), IMHO.
