Front Sight Position

How close does the front sight have to be in relation to the muzzle in order to get it properly aligned with where the shot goes? I ask because I have a rail on top of my rifle, but not near the front. The built in flip ups are a pain in the ass to sight in with when wearing mask and goggles, so I wanted to pick up some flip up irons.

I'm basically concerned that I'll have the front and rear sights basically too close together.

It's your typical, top-of-gun rail. As you can see, not much room to work with. I'm planning to wedge an optic on that rail as well somehow. I'm thinking HK drum style sight with the corresponding front sight, but I might consider getting some of those fancy flip ups typically used on ARs.

The longer the sight radius(distance between front and rear sight), the better it is for accuracy. SIG55x already improved on the AK-style packaging which it was based with a rear sight on the back of the receiver instead of the typical AK-style position. You don't really want to mess with that....

To be most effective...iron sights will be:
1. Parallel to the bore
2. Directly above the bore
3. As close to the bore centerline as possible
4. As far apart as possible

Placing your iron sights very close together essentially reverts it back to long pistol length...far from ideal, but will probably work in a pinch (better than nothing). It'll look goofy as hell too...if you care about that.

You might want to opt for an optic that has built in emergency sights...like the Specter/ELCAN/ACOG.

Also...the typical rail mounted BUIS setups are typically built to establish a sight line a given height above the rail...so you'd probably need both a front and a rear BUIS. The built in iron sight on that rifle is set at a height that matches the built in front sight...if you stuck a rail mount front BUIS on it and used the built in rear sight, you'd probably never be able to get the gun to shoot on target.

If youre set on hk drum sights you could add an RAS handguard to extend the distance between the sights.

I basically only thought about HK drums because it's the closest thing to what other stock SIG rifles look like. As far as I know, only the 553 doesn't have the drum sight. The RIS idea is certainly attractive, but as far as I know the Marui and ICS rail systems won't fit on the G&G because of the difference in the width of the handguard.
