Broken ak gas block pivot lever, To JB weld or not to JB Weld

Hey guys, rookie move on my part. :banghead:

I wanted to paint my VFC ak74 furniture red so i took them off my gun. then i was playing with the gun and caught the pivot lever that holds the top forwards hand guard in place on my table and the darn thing snapped in half!!!

(not my picture, camera is MIA)

It broke off right where the flat arm is flush with the top of the gas block if the pivot was facing up. (thats kind of a vague description i know, but its the best i can do. its late and i am tired.)

Now the problem is that the metal (the gun is a VFC so it should be all metal.) is very thin. i was wondering if a bead of JB weld applied to the break would be strong enough to hold it in place permanently? or should i cut a small piece of tin or thin metal and JB weld it flat on the two pieces for added strength?

any help would be appreciated, as i have next to no experience with JB weld.

thanks for the help guys

Gilles.

well after some research on the google. i decided to go with cutting a small plate and jb welding it to both sides of the break, once it is dried and hard (fingers crossed that it will hold) i will sand it smooth and paint it black for a very "AK" simplistic repair.

and if it still won't hold i will have to put an add up on the buy/sell for a new one. Hopefully someone has a broken ak and are willing to part it out, as i can't find anything like it on a site that will ship to canada. i will post an update in a few weeks with the results.

The part you are referring to is the take down lever on kalasnikovs. The part snapping in half usually means it's made of a zinc aluminum alloy generally called (potmetal). I am suprised VFC uses potmetal considering it is a higher class gun then others.

I have tried repairing potmetal recievers before with the same process and it does not work. The epoxy putty does not have enough strenght to hold the part together for it to be functional. Potmetal cannot be glued, soldered or even welded back together.

Pot metal is my mortal airsoft enemy anything aluminum, steel, iron heck even plastic is better.

My advice is to buy a LCT ak gasblock, as LCT use VFC style design with higher quality materials. Or you could Buy a real Kalashnikov take down lever and fit it youself.

Yah, the piece was pot metal for sure. a bit disappointed myself. i think i will try to buy a real steal takedown lever and replace it. (thanks for giving me the name of the piece by the way, pivot lever was not working at all on Google, kept bringing me to moto sports parts. hahaha)o if i can't get one i was going to go with the LCT gas chamber. I am away till the 15th. i should have an update by then as to what path i chose to take.

thanks for the help kingsix.

Well after a few failed attempts at finding a real steal takedown lever that can be shipped to canada, i decided to just buy the lct part. thanks again for the help
