Shughart m14 scope
Does anyone know what the type of scope Randy Shughart used in Somalia on his m14?
I've tried to find out what he used through the internet but can't find anything and my knowledge of scopes is pretty bad. |

M68 Aimpoint according to imfdb.org
Of course that is just the movie and films do suffer from anachronisms http://www.imfdb.org/index.php/Black...Down#M14_Rifle

It could not have been the aimpoint in real life, the events occured in the early 90s and the first Comp M2s (M68) were not produced until 2000.
The book (which is excellent BTW) has a lot of good pictures in it and I'm fairly sure they have a few of him with his weapon. -Grant |

This M14 History is exhaustive.
http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=4323 Shughart's M14 gets a mention on page 74. All it says is "M14 w/ leather sling and dot sight". There's a good chance that Shughart used a Leupold MK 4 / Ultra since that reached Special Forces units 1988 for the newer M24 system and was in use Army wide by 1992. Edit: the movie is littered with understandable anachronisms and inaccuracies such as M4's, the near total absence of 6 color desert uniforms and of course Aimpoints. M1 and M3 scopes are made by various airsoft manufacturers at a variety of price points.

There's no picture of Shughart in the book with an M14, only one with him beside Gary Gordon, the other Delta operator that was with him at the time. There's pictures of one of the rangers with an aimpoint M2000 in the book though.

Shughart could've used some type of Aimpoint. I bought my first one in 1987, and used it for several years in IPSC competition.

From the pictures of CAG I've seen (Which isn't many) from that era they're using Aimpoint 2000s, 3000s or 5000s. Then again, some of those pics are still debated on what they're using....
Edit: According to Aimpoint, the 2000 series was discontinued in Jan. 1989, the 5000 was launched in '91 and discontinued in '98. Last edited by GSK88; February 8th, 2012 at 23:01.. |
