Tools Required

So I am getting into airsoft. I have many years of experience around Firearms and Paintball. I would like to learn as much as possible about the AEG and GBB. So in that light I am wondering what tools I might need to acquired as to learn how to modify, upgrade or repair an Airsoft gun.

So which of these tools would be a speciality tool and where would I get it. And what more common tools would I need?

The only special tools you will need is a set of metric Allen keys that go down to 2mm and a set of Torx screwdrivers or tips. TM gearboxs need a T10 bit.

Dental picks are a great thing to have not NEEDED but make some things a lot easier for how cheap they are. Most other things are mostly done by reg. tools. Depending on what gun you go with of course, but if your an AR fan a very handy tool is an armours wrench like the one seen here: http://ebaybanned.com/product_info.php?products_id=1597

Visit www.mechbox.com and watch their videos on mechbox disassembly and reassembly. It will tell you what tools you need and show you how everything is done. Most of the tools needed you may already have short of maybe the Torx screwdrivers.

Brilliant thanks guys. I will be heading to Canadian Tire to purchase a set of driver bits and what not. Yes I do realize that means a set of tools most probably reserved for this sport.

Oh well, why not.

A bunch of really small punches and a rubber mallet works wonders too... same with some fine locking tweezers

I bought a small screwdriver set from Cdn Tire last year that has all the bits I need including the torx and metric hex (allen) bits. Was about $20 or so.

Yes, I saw some driver sets that looked appropriate. I was at Canadian Tire this week. The Domestic Overlord was with me. She went to look for water filters, and I just sheepishly said, I am just going to look at the tools. She glanced at me in wonder. I then quickly replied. Well, you know we need some drill bits and nail sets for some of those things you want done around the house.

We part ways. I wonder, did she buy it. She probably shakes her head, and mumbles, what toys is he getting now??

If you're really asking about "specialty tools", consider valve keys, pin removers, a pinion gear tool, a receiver clamp, a URX installation tool and a fully integrated armorer's wrench (or just a delta ring key, but a fully integrated unit will have flash hider collars and buffer tube collar keys as well.)

You won't find ANY of these items at Canadian Tire, and half of those items you won't find at a real steel firearms store. They need to be sourced from an Airsoft-specific store.

It really depends on what type of systems you want to work on, but except for the receiver clamp, URX installation tool and the armorer's wrench, all of the other items are fairly generic. The receiver clamp, URX installation tool and armorer's wrench are more specialized towards specific systems and gun platforms. A Daniel Defense delta wrench would also go alongside that URX installation tool when it comes to very specific installation tools.

If you want to get even more specific, some specialty airsoft guns (PTW and bolt action guns) require a specialized key to open cylinders and such (although you may be able to makeshift a tool...)

Sounds like the same thing I have, Mastercraft Precision Bit set, all the bits you need for taking appart a mechbox.. Otherwise just a magnetic screwdriver for inner grip screws, ect..

You will NEED metric/imperial Hex keys.... GRRRR

My kit consists of:

Torx set
Hex set (plus many loose ones)
Jewelers screwdriver set (philips and flat head)
Philips screwdriver #0,1,2
Philips screwdriver bits for when I get lazy and use an electric screwdriver
3/4" flat head
Needle nose pliers
Small side snips

Additional items I also use:
Hammer
Vice

I now have a motor pinion gear tool but that's not entirely necessary. Need a valve key but am in the process of making one that will be universal for all my GBB mags.

I don't know if these can be classified as a tool but I go through tons of Q-tips when I go and do a massive cleaning. I use them in cleaning mechbox's and GBB's. Work much better than rags or paper towels and they get into all the nooks and crannies.

I usually carry almost all of the tools listed above to every game I go to. The dental picks are great for pulling motors and working with wires in modded handles. The small hammers and punch sets are great for removing those tight body pins, and a set of small files are a God send.

BTW Mr.Shiney, I will be working on some fixer AEGs in the next week or two out in the West end of Mississauga (Dundas and Winston Churchill area). Let me know if you are interested in coming out and getting some hands on experience with version 2 mech boxes and ARs.

Only cost will be a coffee.

My advice if you want to get better dont spend most of your time researching and Q's in just one airsoft forums check out other forums from other corners of the world. You never know what you might come across out there someone like a true expert and give you tips and tricks not found in the internet.

He was just offered hands on, one on one time with Sha Do. I am positive that will be far superior than reading what others from around the world have to offer.

Physical hands on and an experienced gun doc by his side or reading tid bits on the internet from various people who's experience will vary?
