SPR or DMR. What are the differences

I know what both DMR ans SPR mean. Designated Marksman Rifle and Special Purpose Rifle.

What are the differences between the two?

What makes a DMR not a SPR and vice versa?

SPR is specific m16 variant. DMR is a categorie in wich the SPR fits.

A DMR gun can be anything, an assault rifle or a battle rifle. An SPR could be used an a DMR gun.

An SPR is just a mod of an armalite. Its called a special purpose rifle today, however it used to be a called a special purpose reciever. Info on that availble here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_..._Purpose_Rifle

In loose terms, a DMR can be many different types of guns while an SPR is just one gun.

Thats just my take on it, please feel free to jump in at anytime if anyone has anything else.

I always thought that DMR was the position in the fireteam whereas SPR was the gun used...

Designated Marksman... the guy carrying a Designated Marksmen rifle...

Same a a Sniper carrying a Sniper Rifle...

DMR can be any rifle oriented at precision shooting (From SPR to SR-25, HK SL-8 or MSG-90 and so on).

As stated a few times already, SPR is a US designation for a specific rifle modded to be more precise.

The DMR is the rifle used by the Designated Marksman, which is mid way between a rifleman and a full sniper. The DM's purpose is to be able to provide accurate fire while still functioning as a rifleman within the squad (including the ability to lay down automatic fire in some cases).

The SPR (Mk.12 rifle) is the designation for a specific weapon (or series of weapons, actually). It's also more than just a few mods, being purpose built from the ground up using high end precision parts: more specifically, while chambered to 5.56x45 the Mk.12 doesn't use the standard M855 round but rather a specially developed round, the Mk.262. The Mk.262 features a heavier (77 gr) HPBT bullet, and the SPR's barrel is designed specifically to take advantage of this round. Using a standard M855 ball round in an SPR would seriously affect performance.

Two other weapons of this type are the Marine Corps' Squad Advanced Marksman Rifle (SAM-R) and it's US Army counterpart, the Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDM-R). These are closer to being "modded" rifles, as they're rebuilt "in house" by Quantico Armoury and the Army Marksmanship Unit, respectively, using higher end parts for improved accuracy.

The SPR is used by USSOCOM.
