The R3/3 Sling System for the MP5 was introduced in 1973. The sling itself employs three attachment points. The front point is the eyebolt. The rear mounting point is on the buttstock (MP5A4) or butt (MP5A5).
The third attachment point was a mystery to many when they first encountered the MP5. It is a metal 'U'-shaped clip fastened to the left side of the magazine well. Some thought its purpose was for hanging the MP5 on a hook on a wall, while others couldn't explain it at all!

HIGH PORT ARMS CARRY POSITION

This position is used to administratively carry the weapon high across the chest in a military "port arms" position, hands free. It allows the user to use his or her hands for other tasks without the weapon getting in the way. Yet, in this position, the weapon can easily and quickly be deployed into a firing position.

To place the weapon in the High Port Arms carrying position, the middle bar of the double eye is inserted into the metal clip that is riveted onto the left side of the mag well on the 9mm rifle. The 308 rifle has the metal bar on the left of the front forearm grip. Once the double eye is inserted into the metal clip (some force is required) the weapon will hang slightly higher and closer to the chest of the operator.

To deploy the weapon into a firing position the shooter grasps the weapon by the forearm and trigger group and with a quick aggressive thrust, shoves the weapon forward in the direction of the muzzle. The double eye will detach from the metal clip allowing the weapon to be fired from the hip or shoulder. To return the weapon to the High Port Arms carrying position, reinsert the double eye into the metal clip.
