Charging voltage for batteries?

Hey guys, I thought it might be useful to give the ideal charging voltages for our batteries.

I recently received a new Mini type 1100Mah Ni-Mh 8.4v battery and charger. The charger has an output of 12 volts @ 300Mah.

I wondered if this was safe because my other charger supplied with my JG M4's 1100Mah battery has an output of 8.4 volts @ 250Mah.

Is 8.4 Volts even enough to charge an 8.4v battery pack? I thought you had to apply a little bit more voltage to get them to charge fully.

There must be some kind of formula to work out what voltage and how long to charge at the voltage for a certain battery pack type/capacity. For instance ** Charge 1100Mah Ni-Mh for 3 hours with 12v 300ma output **

thanks!

You need more voltage than the battery is rated at to actually charge it well. My digital smart charger puts out a variable voltage, but for 8.4V packs it's ~10V.

ok so is 12v @ 300MA gonna hurt my 8.4v Batteries? Weird that they would supply it.

Yeah that's kind of strange. But I'm not sure. If you're getting into airsoft, I would suggest investing in a good smart charger.

depends on a lot of other factors...

you will need 1.2x the voltage typically to charge a pack. Then calculate the time by dividing the capacity of your pack by the current rating... should give you a rough estimate.

better chargers need less voltage as they control more factors (like current)

Keep in mind that if you try to charge a higher rating pack (let's say... 4200mAh pack on a 250mAh wall adapter) it will probably fry because the pack will "suck" more current than what the components can handle.

Get a good charger... it will be well worth it.

Planning on it, I want to get a hobby charger anyway because of my R/C cars. Selectable amperage and all.

1 amp charge = 1.1 hours on an 1100Mah battery
2 amps = 0.55 hours

don't really need to go any higher but It'll be able to recondition batteries too. I need all these features for R/C's.

Not exactly right...

you can charge some VERY good 1400mAh packs at 3A no problems...

It was discussed in an other tread... I gave my opinion already... (BTW I can't even recall how many R/C I had)

here is the tread:
