Alternative to tactical optics

There's a relatively new variety of ghost-ring sights out there, which have pretty good reviews by those that use them. Ghost rings have all the benefits of apertures combined with quickness of opens, but lack long range accuracy. So they're perfect for airsoft.

Sorry, but ghost rings are not new. Years ago, many shooters used to remove the aperture insert in their peep-sights to provide the same effect (which works quite well for airsoft).

im just currious but what is the major differance between sights. I know how they work and how to aim with them but what is the differance aside from shape.

Definately, true enough, light works in funny ways sometimes. You'll even see people with nearly blacked-out lenses on one side of their glasses, all in the name of better sighting.

But the inventor of these particular sights believes they are kind of new. He's got some research to support his claim, but the old adage 'believe none of what you hear, and half what you see', comes into play. But the reading sort of makes sense. The only part I'd disagree with is that night isn't solid black We've all probably been places where it sure seemed like it.

Wiki describes a lot of it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_sight But there's always another type! Don't ask me the difference between a U notch and a Buckhorn, etc.

I only took basic physics, so what I understand is second-hand. Diopters, though, work because of how the eye works. Since there's a little hole you look through, the middle has the most light coming through and thus it's the brightest. Then the brain automatically centers the front sight blade tip in the middle, by instinct. But they're not fast. Kalashnikov sights can be faster to aim than an AR15, but not as accurate, and that's the general rule I understand from all iron sights (perhaps all sights in general) - the more accurate, the slower to acquire the target.

A quick and dirty way to do this would be to use a single scope mount ring in the rear, lined up with the front sight.

The point is not absolute accuracy, but to be able to pick-up and lineup a target as fast as possible. The original concept was for a shotgun, and since airsoft ballistics are closer to those of a shotgun's smoothbore barrel, you can see where this is going?

so the real short answer is they allow for faster target aquisition.

They allow extremely fast target acquisition, but not a fantastic pinpoint accuracy. The idea is similar (for us) as using a RD sight with no power. It points in the right direction with no effort.

How to say... it's like picking a spot versus shooting for center of mass. This 'new' sight just looks like a simpler improvement.

i can see how it would help for airsoft, but Ghost Ring Sights are still much more effective on a real shotgun

True, better on shotguns, but remember that airsoft works closer to shotguns than rifles. Both use smoothbore barrels, the ballistics are pretty darned close too.

So for airsoft, ghost rings are a very good idea.

Yea, look at this puppy -

...Some day the commies will get around to producing some more of them and shipping them on over.

About the perfect sight I could imagine would be ghost-ring with a fibre-optic front. This guy with the hex-sites says you're supposed to focus on the target, where I've understood that focus ought to be on the front sight.
