Alright, suppose we go along with your idea and only compress the air when shooting. You'd need a strong, very small motor. You'd also need to house your piston in something, like a cylinder. It would need to be sealed very well. To move your piston you'd need a couple of gears, at least 3, maybe 4 in some situations. But how do you load the BBs? You'd also need a nozzle of some kind that reciprocates. I'm not going to do a pun with the back and forth movement. How do you do that? Do you use a servomotor that is timed with your gears? That might require some electronics. Maybe some kind of arm attached to a gear like train wheels?
Then how do you prevent the system from stopping mid-shot and shooting a BB with not enough air? You'd need some kind of break that auto engages and prevents the gears going backward. All of this sounds really ambitious to me, how much time have you spent on this? You should start selling these, you'll be rich man.

I run an SMP M249 and use a 90ci 4500 psi tank. Obviously dependant on the number of shots fired, but in usually good for most of a day on the tank. If you're a heavy shooter, strap a scuba tank on and your good to go.

If you're looking at russian lmg/mmg I recommend a echo1 pkm. I got one second hand off here and love it almost maybe even more than my classic army mk46. Mk46 is short but chunky while pkm is long and slim so keep that in mind.
