Airsoft realism for real gun training?

I'm curious about getting some airsoft guns similar to my real guns to plink away with in my back yard to see if I like it, and if the practice crosses over well for competitions. Preferably, I'd like them as similar as possible, especially in their operation, and stripping. Thinking of starting off with a pistol like a FNX45 or a 1911. Thoughts?

Key points, yes and he touches on the best point: cost.
FWIW, the Nutnfancy project who was a huge critic of airsoft has come around to the benefits for repetition training etc (yes, I know he's a douchebag, so focus on Haley's comments).

But the absolute critical point to keep in mind that Travis mentioned at the start: perils of backyard shooting. NEVER brandish your airsoft guns within public view. This includes in a private backyard where ANYONE can see you. I don't know about your setting, maybe you live on an acreage or something where your neighbour will ever see you. Also, check with your local bylaws on if the discharge of airsoft guns is permitted within your town or city, if you let us know what municipality you live in on here, folks may be able to help you out in this regard. In general, best to set up a range in your house or garage where you can practice manipulation.

Got that part covered. Any thoughts on a good 1911 or the FNX45? What's a good 1911 (not a spring gun, need semi auto), or is that FNX45 any good? They function exactly like the real ones?

TM 1911

VFC fnx45, prone to problems later, wouldn't recommend.

Ok, I'll check out the 1911. Forgot to ask about a Sig P220. Any thoughts on a good one of those?

+1 for a TM 1911.
If you want a P220 then get a TM, WE, or KJW P226 or P229

TM is your best bet imo for solid qc.

If you want something cheap like a Glock, WE17 would be a decent route, but extra 50 bucks for a TM g17 @ mach1 for $250 be a better option.

When I went from pure airsoft to real stuff I was a better shot than some Joe Guy off the street, but I have a fuck ton of bad habits and subtle pulls that can only be worked out at the range.
Safety, reloads, general familiarity/ dexterity, sure. But no matter how many times I've watched the Magpul DVDs I still managed to double-feed an AR and then blanked and froze when I had to clear that malfunction.

It's quite literally like comparing Kendo to soldier systems in feudal Japan. They are really only tangentially related.

If you want firearm experience - go shoot a firearm. You want to simulate a firearm in order to get the feel of it - go shoot a firearm. Airsoft gas blow back action is similar but not the same. I would not want to supplement any kind of firearm related training with an airsoft gun. It's one or the other. It's different on so many levels...

I've lost count of the amount of guns I've had, shot, bought and sold. Heck, I've picked up 5 guns since Jan, and I'm looking for another. I shoot as often as I can, but sometimes I just can't make it out to the range, or it's super shitty outside and I don't want to go. I'm not looking to replace my range time, I'm looking for something super convenient I can do at home to supplement it. I'm in the process of getting set up for more serious competitions, PPC competitions. here's a PPC 1500 duty pistol target and my setup from a match last Sat (keep in mind this isn't a sanctioned PPC match, its a very informal match, and that pistol wouldn't have qualified to be a 'duty pistol')

Well if that's what you typically use then a Hi Capa will be right up your alley.

Definitely. Check out Airsoft spots in your area, there may be some IPSC events you can jump into.
If you already know what's helping you and what isn't, bbs and gas will cost you cents instead of a buck twenty per pull.
