RS SVD Component Question

Hey folks,

Not sure if this should go here or in the Gun Doc forum, but whatever.

So I bought a Real Sword SVD used off of another user here in the forum. Gun was in good shape, but, it wasn't working properly. I took it out and fired it a few times, but, shots were dropping off well before 100 feet. I figured there was a compression problem, loss of air somewhere in the system, but, I'm a newbie about gun maintenance, so I didn't know what to look for.

It was suggested that I get a new hop up unit, because they're a common problem, but, I've pulled the gun apart, and I think it's actually missing a piece. I think there should be a spring, that sits around the inner barrel, and presses the hop up back against the piston. This spring is not there, which means that the piston fires, knocks the hop up forward, and there's nothing to push it back. This means there's a huge gap between the piston and the hop that air is escaping through, which would explain my problem.

So, two questions:

1) Am I correct? Should there be a spring here?

2) If so, where can I get one of these springs?

Normally most styles of hop up either have a spring of some sort or are locked (bolted or screwed) to the gearbox. Im not sure of the exact design of the svd hop up but yes it should have something kepping the hop seated to the nozzel. You can prolly just salvage a spring. For m4's a lighter or pen springs work. Folks have even gond over to putting orings on the barrel to hold it against the gearbox.

Edit. This or the g and p spring down below should work as well.

Oh, good. I thought I was missing something, so I'm glad it's only a small spring. Thanks for confirming for me. Which G&P spring do you mean? I only see large springs when I look around, so I'm not sure what to get.

Could I just go to a hardware store and buy a generic spring that fits around the inner barrel?

Go to the real sword web site, I'm pretty sure the manual is posted there, showing an exploded view of all its components. oo-rings are popular for solving these problems though.

Hey, good thinking! You were right. I'm missing this spring:



The gap looks pretty big for O-rings, but, I'll poke around some local hardware stores and see if I can find an appropriately sized spring. I assume it doesn't have to be exact, if people are just sticking o-rings in there to fix it.

This isn't really a help comment, but I just have to say congratulations on getting one of the best AEG's of all time! The RS SVD is my all time favorite gun!

Sorry forgot the Link. There is the link and if you scroll down there is also a g and p spring. However looking at the posted pic you need a longer spring. Could perhaps use a cut down bolt action spring. Some have a 7.5-8mm inner diam. Should fit nicely over an inner. Altho perhaps the top spring from a fat clicky pen may work. Or hit your local home hardwear and check out various comoression springs looks to be 1.5-2in in length. I dont think a longer spring will make much of a difference provided its not too long.

see if a long motor spring will work. Sometimes they do for that kind of application. Sometimes they are too wide.

Okay! So, I grabbed a couple springs from the local hardware store, and found one that fits:



It fits nicely over the barrel. It's too long, but, I can cut it down. My only concern is that the coils are pretty thick, making it very stiff. Is that going to be a problem, if there's too much resistance? I can't imagine an o-ring has much resistance, and apparently people use those, so... Will it be okay?
