You should probably invest in a better vest then a zip up.
That already limits you to using single pouches and not being able to mount many variations of thing to your chest because of that stupid zipper. Not to mention they break and you lose teeth to bb shots. That's from experience. I ran a zip up vest for my first few months in airsoft. Then I met people at ttac and learned a thing or two.

Just go out and play in whatever you can afford to at first. I've seen guys playing in t-shirt, jeans and with two pistols with no vest. It's about having fun. If a milsim game has restrictions on kit then you just don't play, there are plenty of games out there and milsim probably isn't going to be what you want when you're first starting out anyway.
As you can afford it, buy what you need. As a lot of games are split tan/green, just choose which you prefer to begin with and kit out with that. As you get more involved you'll probably end up with a set up both. I just started this summer and I preferred tan so got some multicam and tan chest rig. Don't worry about a pistol unless you're in cqb. |

I'm currently running a triple double stack AR/AK pouch, and i have 5 AK mid cap mags..along with a utility pouch and more room to fit maybe a radio and ID pouch..pistol mag is on my belt...so is a flashlight..and dump pouch..(when I bought the vest and pouch..I actually made sure it will work by putting it on in the shop) anyway..I do think the zip up looks kinda stupid..but it works for me at the time being..probably gonna swap out for a camo carrier some time if I find a cheap one. (that whole vest costed me around 140 with pouches..probably looking to get a carrier for 40-50 and buy pouches for that..) on the other note..I went for coyote tan jacket since my pants are tan already..they actually go pretty well together when I actually went to a shop that had a lot of supplies. I looked at the OD and foliage green..I don't like them..they actually look very out of place..

some ODs actually look very blue. It's true that they look out of place. coyote is much more neutral.
