Cleaning Rod substitute/length ?

Ok, I must have searched half a dozen topics and read a shit load of posts. I did read a few mentions here and there that people can make custom cleaning rods as long as there were no sharp or pointy edges to damage the inside of the barrel. That's fine.

My biggest concern is that the TM MP5 RAS will be my first gun. I'm buying it from a friend that only used it a few times. Problem is, he doesn't have the cleaning rod that came with it.

I know that the rods usually come with some kind or marker to make sure you don't insert it too far down the barrel. Since I'll be finding something to make a custom cleaning rod, I was wondering; How far is too far? If anyone had a TM MP5 RAS out there with a cleaning rod, I'd be very greatful if you could tell me what the length is from rod end to the depth marker. If not, any pointers on how far NOT to go would be great.

I just don't wanna be the first guy to stick a custom cleaning rod in his AEG and say "DOH!". :smack: (even though I'm sure it's already been done! :-D )

Take a trip to Canadian Tire and pick up the $8 Hoppes cleaning kit (making sure it's go the .22cal tip in it), and a $2 pacakge of .22cal cloth patches (200 count). Fold a patch in three, slide it into the plastic tip, use a drop of silicon oil and you're all set. Why screw around with making a custom cleaning rod when you can spend $10 and have a good one!

And don't worry about how far though. When you clean the barrel, use your fingers to twist & lower the rod into the barrel until it stops at the bottom, then twist & raise it and out. Make sure you turn the hop up full off first, but the tip of the rod won't damage anything in the gun unless you ram it into the barrel like you're loading a flintlock musket.

Thanks Stalker! I had thought of an actual cleaning kit but I wasn't sure if a .22 rod would fit, thanks again.
