Beta Project/Magpul AK Mag Fitment

Recently acquired a fair amount of these in a trade - however, they fit excellent into my cybergun/cyma AK74u - but they don't feed at all - only the first bb fires out

The mag functions and feeds fine if I push up from the bottom of the mag.

Anyone have any experience with these?

Perhaps you need to shave a bit of the locking tab off, if they're too tight.

From my experience they dont work in ak's cause the magpul masada akm only takes those mags and they wont take regular ak mags so right there is already a problem. But i could be wrong but for the life of me couldnt get a regular ak mag to fit, the bb hole is further back to accomadate the m4 style hop up the masada has

There are 2 different types of Beta Project AK mags, one for the Masada AKM and one for "normal" AKs. Maybe that's why you were having so much difficulty. :P

I have the Magpul "Tactical" AK, which is basically a CYMA. The mags are a bit touchy, you have to play around with the mag catch and/or mag catch lip on the mag to get them to feed reliably as Styrak has already suggested.

Huh maybe thats why good to know =]

As a suggestion to the OP try shaving the bb stopper down a bit this makes it easier by allowing the hopup to not have to go in as far to release the bbs

These fitted perfect in my CYMA AK AIMS and feeded perfectly too....Maybe you need to shave the bb retainer...

Also if they were the AKM mags the wouldn't fit because the akm has a m4 hop up and not a ak hop up.

These mags also fed fine in my CYMA AK. Is there a lot of up/down play in the mag?

This is actually my first AK so some of the terms everyone is using im a bit out of touch with

Its weird because some of the mags have an up down play, which is what the feeding problem is - if i push the bottom of the mag harder up into the lower receiver it feeds fine - other mags fit nice and tight with no play but they do the exact same thing..

I've actually tried filing down some random parts of one of the mags to see if it was a fitment issue to no avail. I have sadly ruined one of the mags..

Edit: These are also definitely the AK beta project/magpul mags - they were purchased from airsoftparts.ca for $35 each.

When comparing this to the hicap that came with the gun it almost looks identical - mind you the hicap feeds flawlessly

Edit edit: is the bb retainer you all mentioned that little knobby inside where the bbs are inserted? How would I even get at that

The BB retainer is the little plastic spring-loaded piece that keeps the BBs in the bag when you load it. When you insert a mag, that gets pushed back by the hop up and thus the bbs are free to be pushed into the hop up chamber. Sometimes that little tab is too long and doesn't get pushed out of the way far enough for BBs to feed - except when first inserted, thus why 1-2 BBs will still shoot after a fresh mag is inserted.

As you can see - if I shaved off any more of that bb retainer it wouldn't hold the bbs in at all - I actually did this with the mag I already fried and they just sputter out now - theres not very much holding down the bbs either way.

Here is also a comparison with the flawless hicap that came with the gun - they're not misaligned it just looks that way because of they way they are in my hand

Now that I look..I wonder if that little concave dip in the bb retainer has any effect

Edit: I'm actually even thinking of replacing the stock hop up - Pusangani recommends the red Element brand and a lot of other random google searches say the King Arms

Update:
Taking off the mag release entirely to see if there was fitment issues with the actual hop up itself - this proved to be the issue. The stock hop up unit I have does not fit into the magazine itself - im assuming possibly not long enough - I plan to order the king arms ak hop up to see if this solves this issue.

UPDATE
As an update to this post I bought the King Arms AK hop up unit and this solved the issue completely - I was able to use any mag.

Quick Fix

I had this same issue with my AK beta project. What I did to fix it was quite easy and resulted in very tight mags with little wobble or play and they fed reliably every round in every AK I own.

I shimmed the mags with small layers of plastic (hot tub chemical test strips cut down) underneath the actual mag lip on the rear of the mag (see Pic). I added a couple on millimeters of material with crazy glue and trial fit each mag. This forces the mag up higher and deeper into the mag well when the magazine release catch comes forward. This ensures the hopup is fully inserted into the mag and removes mag wobble. You can shave the plastic to give it a slight ramp and now you have mags that feed140 rounds without a hitch.

Maddog let me inspect his AK last game I was at and I can indeed confirm his modifications are the cat's pyjamas. No wobble, feels like a million bucks!

I also had the same issues on a Beta Project AK. The one magazine that came with the AEG fed great. The 6 i purchased all misfed or did not feed what so ever.

I noticed while unloading them they came out with no force behind them while the supplied magazine shot them out all over the place.

Lubricated some bbs, and loaded them into the mag a few times and now they all feed like a champ.
