When do Side arms stop being side arms
Hey just a little chair softing right now.
I run the games out here and I have considered placing a FPS limit on side arms 50fps lower than our Full auto limit *at 350-370*. The purpose of a side arm is to be used in closed quarters when it is no longer "safe" to use your main arm. This is especially important for our snipers and marksmen as they are generally hotter than the 400fps. Now what i have noticed is some side arms are getting hotter and hotter. Ranging in the 400fps+ range! There is no difference in getting hit by a BB from a rifle at 400 or a side arm at 400. With a sniper being forced to switch to a side arm to engage and close distances if he is firing at 400.... well kind of defeats the purpose. Just wondering if anyone has considered doing a FPS set up like this? What your thoughts on having pistols shooting as hot as rifles are as well. *PS I know I am using the term rifle wrong* |

If your pistol is shooting as hot as your rifle, then it doesn't matter which you use close up, just use a single shot and pick your location. No problem. No use putting arbitrary restrictions on pistols.
If you're using it as a sniper backup gun, then yes the FPS matters. Anything up to the regular rifle limit is OK is it not? But the majority of pistols are 350fps or lower anyway |

A general standard
-Outdoors: Assault, DMR, LMG, SMG, Pistol, Shotgun, grenade round, etc 400-420 FPS (at any range outdoors) -Indoors: Assault, DMR, LMG, SMG, Pistol, Shotgun, grenade round, etc 340-360 FPS (at any range indoors) -Sniper or BA: Gas, electric, Spring (semi-auto or bolt action "sniper" weapon only) 480-500 FPS (minimum engagement distance 30 feet) Obviously your fields limits will be different, but this is a very common structure to use; just change the numbers. Pistols or sidearms are no different than a primary, and are accepted as the same FPS. Although they can often be used at a closer range, they are also commonly used as a quick defense weapon. Especially when your out of ammo. If I'm locked and loaded, and there is no physical hinderance I'll use my M16 at close range instead of switching to a sidearm. Snipers are the best example of this. A sniper is often forced into a situation where they "must" use a sidearm. That sidearm should be as or nearly as capable of hitting their target as their enemies AR. Although FPS doesn't always make the gun, it can make a difference. If your indoors, then it must follow indoor limits, and if your outdoors vice-versa. Safety comes down to the players, and the knowledge that this sport is a risk in itself. If someone is concerned about getting shot, they can wear full neck, face, and head protection.

there's a bit of a concern now, I'm seeing an influx in cheaper than green gas CO2 pistols hitting the market, and far more accessible than the GG powered guns.. the majority of these pistols are shooting over 350 into the 400s.
If the purpose of your pistol is to engage targets in your MED, a pistol should be shooting at CQB strength, why would you even enforce a MED when your springer rifle or DMR shoots 450 and your pistol shoots 420? which is still higher than most field limits for AEGs, otherwise, what's the point in carrying a pistol? What about CQB rules in entering structures? If your pistol is shooting as hot as a 400 fps field AEG, what's the point of using the pistol (from a safety point of view)? There are some field rules in place that say you can only use a pistol or semi fire only when entering and operating inside a structure, so having a pistol that shoots as hot or hotter than some AEGs can be more dangerous (potentially) inside a building, even when it's semi only. |

tell that to the guys buying these pistols and thinking they're going to be using them in CQB situations... chronoing of pistols is not mandatory yet... most game organizers are only chronying rifles.

Not Eye Safe, Pretty Boy Maximus on the field take his picture!

We chrono everything at claybank cause we know damn well some pistols are over 400
YOU are running the game, if YOU feel it's necessary to implement the rule, then it's YOUR decision being made to keep others safe. Out here it doesn't matter because everyone runs stock green gas pistols that are all 280-330fps. If we had an influx of high power CO2 pistols, I'm sure we would implement a 350fps cap for pistols too. |

As stated above; indoor limits for indoors, outdoor limits for outdoors. And if your a sniper, then it follows the common limit, not the sniper limit. Only sniper rifles get to shoot at the sniper limit.
Just to be clear. If your field limit for an AEG is 380 FPS then pistols "must" just as strictly follow that rule. If your field AEG limit is 380 and your sniper limit is 450; then your pistol must still be limited to 380. It's a weapon like any other, and is not strictly used in CQB. Unless of course there is also a MED for AEGs and GBBRs.

Then chrony the pistols. Simple.

Most game controllers I know of will always state "if you feel someone is shooting hot then bring it to our attention"...if your finding it becoming more of an occurrence requiring you to crony someone's sidearm then you either ban CO2 pistols or crony all guns.
