ID on Colt M4 Commando Handguards
What is the handguard and stock in this picture? Is it the CAR handguard or is this the new M4A1 handguard? Also is that the 3rd Generation Collapsible Fiberlite stock? This is a Colt M4 Commando btw, or Model 933. Apparently it is currently (current when the article was written, 2001) in use by some Force Recon who carries it instead of an M9 pistol. For more information, http://www.forcerecon.com/strongmenarmed3.htm Thanks Edit: Whoops, caption says M4 hand guards. Then again, photographers have been calling everything AK-47s for years.

It's like a normal M4A1 except with an 11.5" barrel (old style stock, M4 handguards).
It's since been superseded by the Mk18 mod 0 and mod 1 (CQB-R) edit: based on the description it sounds more like it was an NCO/Officer weapon (i.e., people not usually assigned a rifle). MFR operators usually carry a 1911 (MEU SOC 45).

The Colt RO933 (aka the Colt Commando) uses standard M4 handguards. The pictured one is obviously an older model with the earlier stock and the side sling swivel up front. The RO933 is a safe-semi-auto version, the RO935 is safe-semi-burst and the 6933 is a safe-semi version.
I own a 6933, which I bought because I used an RO933 as a patrol carbine for a number of years. Mine has the later version stock. |
