nylon drop leg hoslter and dropping mags

Recently, my generic nylon pistol holster has been tripping the mag release on my pistol, causing the mag to drop out while running... happened twice my last game, luckily, the first time it happened, the guy next to me saw it before we moved. Second time, I had to walk back and retrace my steps, separating me from my squad, but I luckily found it as the area I was in was just rocky.

So what are the solutions people have been coming up with to prevent inadvertent mag releasing? I have a 226 so the mag release is right on the side facing my leg, I would assume if I had a usp this would not be as much of an issue. I recall someone telling me there was a thread dealing with this, but my search-fu turned up nothing.

The problem is your cheap holster, i would recommend buying something a little more high quality. A molded plastic holster wont have that problem.

yes, that is a possibility later on, but I'm looking for a temporary solution.

Personally I recommend getting a custom kydex holster *COUGH*

But if you're looking for a solution using your current holster solution... replicate the below product with gun tape (Fancy army duct tape).

EDIT: Note that this product does not prevent partial ejection of the magazine and you will need to tap the bottom of the mag after the draw to ensure you fire.

We had a guy with his new WE Hi Power out.

He lost the mag last week.

He scoured the field and found the mag eventually.

Then this week he had the pistol the holster with no mag.

The pistol hopped out of the holster and ducked under a tree.

The field was scoured again and again until the pistol was found.

Do you have a big enough pocket to put the whole works into? It won't be quickdraw but you won't loose it either.

lol... yeah taping the mag on works... how the heck do you reload at that point? :P

I ran a few games with the pistol in a mag pouch, it behaved fairly well, but made any sort of quick drawing a bit of a pain. It might just be the extra movement of it banging against my leg that's hitting the release. I haven't had the time yet but when I get a chance to look into the holster, I might add some plastic to make the left side rigid to prevent the mag release from being pushed. Just have to find the appropriate material.

You don't reload, you get shot. But at least you're not searching the field for your magazine.

So to recap.
1) Lanyard on the pistol in case it jumps out of the holster.
2) Holster that retains the pistol without rubbing the release catch.

What will cost more, a new hard shell holster for a 226 or a new magazine?

I had the same problem with a hi-capa. quickly learned i've since changed over to hard style holster. Also I find that leg mounted ones flop more. I have a generic nylon hip mounted one aswell it does not have this problem.

IMHO Danke is right, your primaries down, your pistol's out-your pretty much boned! Maybe you could attach velcro to your grips to hold the mag in and still be changable( is that even a word?). I have had to jimmy-rig stuff when moneys tight.

dump the Drop leg holster

generally not a good idea on the field for this very reason..

till you get a good belt mounted holster. stick the pistol in a mag pouch on your 2nd line rig

I usually run my Pistol either on my first line.. deep right flank .. or if I am running really light.. just a chest rig.. I stick it in the most right mag pouch.

probably what I'll end up doing if I can't somehow create an area that cuts away from the mag release. It's probably too much movement for what the holster can handle, and probably why safariland and serpas have a rigid base.

The plan is to get a genuine serpa later on, but I don't think I can belt mount a holster with my vest, it would just bump it just as much as my leg, it would have to go on the vest directly, probably on the chest... at that point I'm not sure if it will work since I have longass p90 mags I'm trying to find a home for. Though leg is not bad for those.

Pro-tip.... you tape an elastic or two across the bottom of your magwell (working like open topped mag pouches) when you reload you push the elastic aside.

I used to run a holster like that, and after my first lost mag, I took a knife and cut out the entire area around the mag catch. Problem solved until I could afford a SERPA.

Needless to say, that holster is in a box somewhere with a chunk missing from it, but it wont drop a mag again.
