Recording Radio Transmissions & Radio Output Splitter?

Hey ASC,

After purchasing 3 ContourHD's to use for Airsoft, I feel like adding radio transmissions into my videos but I'm unsure how.

How would you record the audio from a radio? Is there a splitter device for Kenwood, or PTT jacks or something?

Ideas?

It would be simple if I wasn't already using that output for my Comtacs. Maybe I'll just buy another cheap-o radio and hook up a recorder to it or something.

Any more ideas?

Not any out there that I know of. It's possible to DIY, but it would be a pain. You could make a splitter that comes off from your radio output, and route it parallel to the line shared with the mic on the ContourHD. However, that would only record incoming/receiving signal, whereas when you transmit, the PTT/line would bypass the mic on the ContourHD, so to capture what you're saying, you also need to route another line from the PTT setup to the mic on the camera, a secondary splitter for the PTT. In addition to all this, you might need a in-line amplifier to properly condition the signal, to deal with the additional impedance from the mic on the ContourHD, otherwise the recorded audio might be too low. Too much work, especially when you got to open up the ContourHD camera to get access to the line shared with the mic, unless the camera already has an audio input jack, but it probably doesn't, which means if you'll looking for a nice disconnect design, you'll need to find the correct male/female jacks, use a 4 wire conductor cable, grommets to protect the wiring when it mates with the device or splitter, and may need a in-line amp. This assumes you already have soldering iron, solder, crimps and the tools you need to get the job done.

It'd probably be faster and easier, just to set up a second walkie-talkie, with an voice recorder next to it, to record all the transmissions in game, then go back in your movie editor to match up the audio w/ the video from the ContourHD.

Ming got it!

Get an adequate radio to receive the same transmissions you'd receive on your main comms. A cheap radio will only do half the job, unless you're using a cheap radio to start with. lol
