Glock 17 holster *Big pictures warning

Had a request to see some of the process in making a leather holster from scratch. Here are some pics to show the different stages. My girlfriend does this as a hobby.

a sheet of wet leather is shaped around the gun.

the gun is plastic wrapped so water doesn't get inside.

Air dried to harden

Excess leather is cut off

The hand stitching

dye is applied

finish is applied and strap sewn on

Nice job. I'll maybe give that a go someday since I do the same for knives I make.

very cool and insipiring! How well does the leather itself retain the pistol without the strap? I've actually never used a leather holster before...

Btw, did you post this on another forum? I recall someone's girlfriend making custom leather holsters somewhere....

You have a great girlfriend. Nice job on that holster.

Sorry, my girl's passion is for leather. I like the handiness of kydex, but I don't like the wear marks it makes on pistols.

Well done, but....did you intend to cant it the wrong way? In that configuration it would be helpful for crossdraw but otherwise will hinder a smooth draw.

For right now the gun fits in very snug. To the point where I can undo the strap, turn the holster upside down, shake it, and the gun will not fall out. Over time, the leather will become slightly looser and this will no longer be true.

And yes, that was me before. She made a holster and chest rig for my 1911.

Yeah, she originally designed the holster for "smooth draw" but later decided that having the gun tilted forward was uncomfortable for her hands when reaching for the gun. I personally like cross draw too.
