As far as I can tell, now that I own Kullwarrior's rifle, the wood is not cheap or soft. The finish on it is. It has been coated with a typical chinese spray shellac or imitation shellac that is tinted. The wood is the same quality as a real firearm. It is Chinese Beech with the same flecks and grain as European beech (which was actually used on some German Kar98ks during the war).

What you need to do is strip the shellac off and apply linseed oil. The stock will be a blonde color.

There is also the possibility of polishing up the feed ramp since it comes apart as a separate piece of the rifle when dissasembled. This will be rather easy.

The barrel band retention is not great. You can pull the bayonet lug right off. A real steel band spring will fit with minor modification and provide much stronger retention. Also I find the bands fit quite loose and will need some shimming (probably with electrical tape underneath) to make the rifle more solid. I will also be replacing the buttplate screws with flat head screws from a real 98k.

These don't exactly seem practical for game use, losing the shells and all. But they seem to have a firm assembly, I'd love to get my hands on one for a movie sometime. Unfortutunately, I'll probably cost somewhere around $600 in Canada.

Amazing review, extremely indepth. Very much appriciate the time you put into writing it.

They're not $600, I got mine slightly above half the price

I haven't exactly seen any for sale, but lately the grand scheme is "import then price x3." But its still a nice gun regardless. - If you know where I can find one without an outrageous price, shoot me a pm.

Can we have some more feedback from those who own the rifle? I am looking forward getting mine but is getting mixed reviews. I also watched all of the vid reviews on Youtube but most of them did a review based on the plastic stock version not the real wood. Can anyone add more info? Thanks!

Its a good collector/wall gun- I have all three versions (ABS/Wood/Gas-Wood)

The shells are pricey and can be lost/damage easy. If you love the Mauser 98k, like I do- Try and get the Gas wood version (better range and a lot more like the Marushin)

Yes its also a Dboys, basically Gas is filled into the bolt and power will be around 450 fps with average accuracy (while the other spring "push cocking" based Dboys have lower fps)

I've stripped the finish off the wood and have confirmed that it is Chinese beech. A lower grade and less dense beech than is used on Norinco firearms with some knots and wood filler. It will still make a nice natural oil finished rifle. The oil finish will be much more durable. If you didn't like to see the knots and filler you could easily stain the stock dark then oil so you get the same strength of finish that will be impervious to chipping and peeling (unlike the original finish).

Thank you CrackShot, I should be getting the gas powered one but they seem harder to find than the spring version

Submachinehead thanks for the info! I think I'll do as you recommend oiling the stock. I only have a question how do we peel off the finish on the wood? With a file or ?

Use Circa 1850 heavy body paint and varnish remover. Available at Home Depot. Follow the instructions. Takes the paint off the takedown eustacian and stock bolt too. On original German Kar98ks there was no finish on the takedown eustacian.

lol I would probably not purchase one again. They are light as hell because of the cheaper wood and light pot metal. Plus they are not gamable with those shells and unreliable. Might as well get a real K98k (A Russian refurb is about $400) and play with it in your house.

I'd wait for the G&G K98, see how that one turns out.
If it happens not to be that great, you can always mod a VSR-10 into the Dboys K98 and just upgrade the VSR internals to your hearts content.

Few guides here:
