Fail safe as opposed to fail secure. I'm with DarkAngel on this one.

Lol this is the most retarded thing I've heard all day, what's wrong with using a normal holster?
Seriously a magnet? So that when you run around and roll etc it falls off? Or is stuck so tight that you can't draw your pistol easily? CAPS is doing a cert. session for new shooters soon, maybe you should join up, easy competition hehehhehheheheheh

Because one should and because one can are two vastly different justifications. This is the latter. DO IT.

That could probably work.
You can use a simple capacitive comparison circuit to detect when you put your hand on your pistol (assuming you would touch a metallic part). Think iPod touch screen or those light touch microwave panels. That is a passive circuit and will only eat under 10uA@5v (assuming you use a TTL chip, you can also do it with CMOS and remove the need for a DC-DC converter to power your board, but with the added chance of noise). A weak electromagnet would be enough to disrupt the field enough to go from rock solid to detachable and let you take the pistol. As soon as you remove the pistol, the capacitance returns to the original and the electromagnet turns off. That is if you manage to make it work in the first place, just an idea like that. |

This is airsoft. We don't need a point or a reason to do cool shit.
It can be impractical as hell and back, but cool as fuck. Like a CQB Barret.

lmfao...who made a CQB Barret? I wanna see. The idea of a magnetic holster would be similar to magnetic mag pouches no? Go get yourself a universal style holster, line it with magnets and start cutting away material until you're comfortable about the retention. Undoubtedly, DarkAngel's concept sounds the nicest and most secure, however you gotta start somewhere before you end up building yourself a $400 magnetic holster lol

Yeah I can't recall either, but the point is, it exists, and therefore trumps all of everyone's "practicality" arguments.
Practicality (real practicality, not airsofter practicality see: CQB Barret) aside, it would be a nifty idea to have magnetic holsters for pistols and rifles (ala Mass Effect, with the shoulder mounted magnetic gun racks) and if my Clone Commando Armour idea ever gets off the drawing board I'll be trying out the magnetic gun holder idea for sure. Even if it's just on V1.0

1) MOST steel pistol parts are NOT stainless steel 99% of the time... unless it's shiny silver stuff. Most are non stainless steel, with a good amount of iron content (I'm talking about real steel here.) 2) Stainless steel can very well be magnetic. It depends on the alloy. EDIT a fugg, qlong beat me to it. |

Magnetism doesn't exist only in metal, you just need to find the principles of proper use of magnetics. Your studies are a waste of time. Please use what you've learned to solve the formula, and repair Ed's Machine.
