Probably old news, but "Airsoft Gun Seizure – Apparently Toys Can Be Real Guns"
TACOMA, Wash. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized a shipment of 30 machine guns that arrived in an ocean container at the Tacoma Seaport last October.
Officials say the shipment of M-4 automatic rifles, manifested only as “Toys and Parts,” was valued at nearly $10,000 and was shipped from a manufacturer in Taiwan. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms found that the rifles were tooled to shoot plastic balls, but replacement of internal components with original machine gun components would render the rifles capable of firing live ammunition. “These rifles could have had far-reaching and potentially devastating ramifications if they had gotten into the hands of individuals who wanted to do harm in the American population,” said Customs and Border Protection Area Port Director, Rolando Suliveras, Jr. “This was a good interception by our officers.” The guns will be destroyed. As far as I can see, Thanh, it COULD be done, with much work. Although, it would be utterly pointless and stressful to do all that machining...

This was chatted about when it happened.
The ATF theory is that you can take the GBBR lower and mix it with an AR upper (which are as common as dogshit in the USA) and presto instant machine gun. It did take a few false starts for them to articulate their logic. Never mind just how many real deal weapons can be found in the US black market, same logic as is used in Canada. Go after folks who aren't breaking the law or murdering people as they're just plain nicer to deal with.

This is indeed very old news; the importer is raising holy hell over it. From an outside observer, it looks to be a new ATF director who was looking for his first big "bust"; the amount of retooling necessary to get these to shoot live ammo is ridiculous.

It's WAY easier and WAY cheaper to buy an AR-15 and put a lightning link in it...

If I remember correctly: A real AK47 costs something like 35$ to buy in parts and put together yourself, making it the worlds cheapest and most used gun in the middle east.
(mind you this is just what I heard from my ex-mil stepdad who was in the middle east during the 80's, it might be even cheaper now Haha.) |
