Want to know more about the WE m4/scar gas system? Here you go

There are many people out there that have wondered about the WE system and its different generation models. These go from Gen 1-4. I will briefly explain the difference between each generation. **Note This information is based solely on what I have gathered about the WE system**


GEN 1 (m4 only)

- Nozzle is made out of brass and has only 1 O-ring seal.
- The hammer has no roller ball bearing for the Bolt carrier group (BCG) to ride smoothly
- A generation 1 m4 has no markings


GEN 2 (m4 only)

- Uses the same brass nozzle and single O ring
- The hammer now has an added ball bearing to allow the BCG to move back and forth smoothly
- A generation 2 WE m4 has laser engravings
- Body of the gun, I believe is an anodized finish like the rest of the generations from 2-4


GEN 3 (m4, hk416, scar)

- The nozzle is now made of stainless steel and now has a double O ring for better seal
- Has the same ball bearing on the hammer
- Engraved and anodized body
- SCAR has a reinforced hinge plate to prevent breakage.


GEN 4 (AKA CO2 system: M4, hk416, SCAR)

- The nozzle again is made of stainless steel, double O rings for better seal, and is now reinforced with a bearing or plate to help the bolt withstand the force of propane, green gas, and CO2.
- ball bearing on hammer
- body is anodized and engraved


One last thing to mention.....other than the different generations there are also the WETTI AWSS models which are meant for military and LE training. Not sure what the different is, but according to what James, from WE, has said, the WETTI version has reinforced parts.

That's a great summary. Can you confirm that the hopup and barrel are the same between v3 and v4?

Mine was a v3...then shortly afterwards the v4 came out.

Though not strictly part of the gas system, there are at least 2 different generations of WE SCAR-L differentiated by their stock hinge plate design. The earlier gen of WE SCAR-L hinge plates lacked reinforcement, which let to a significant rate of breakage, especially on CO2.

Our team recently bought 3 clear lower WE M4 CQBRs.

In two of them, they were completely normal Ver4 guns.

On the third, mine, I have a different bolt: It's darker colored and lighter weight: But it's still steel.

Just thought I'd put that up.

I just swapped a buddy's clear lower M4 CQBR over to a metal lower...the rifle looked exactly the same as a "regular" WE M4. Slightly different finish...nicer in a sense, but that might be because mine is horribly abused by now.

The metal lower swap went smooth as silk.

The Ver3 WE scar has the reinforced hinge plate.

The unmarked 416 compared to the newer M4 has a heavier bolt and what seem to be a heavier trigger and sear so it could be that they decide to upgrade them too

With so many guys getting into these WE rifles...I'm going to put a push on to make up more adjustable valves (version 2 of the ones I made previously).

I could use some help though...I need a stock of the stock floating valves to get started with.

I can make my own float valves...but then it'd be a lot more work.

The float valve can be out of the "new" version 3 SCAR or version 4 M4, or even better out of the "old" version 2/3 M4...they're exactly the same.

Any costs would be nomincal and are dependant on how much wear/tear my taps/dies go through, if I have to ship anything, if I have to buy/make valves, etc...

So...if you've got some spare valves...let me know.
