Barrel extensions for what gun?
Most players use a supressor/silencer to cover their long inner barrel.
Supressors/silencers can be used if you have a 14ccw or cw threading on your outer barrel.

M4 CQB or HK416. Pretty much to turn a CQB gun into a full sized M4

barrel extensions are suitable for AR's exactly for lengthening and shortening the gun, put one on an ak once,didn't look so nice

An AK doesn't need anything to look nice. Unless it's clearsoft. Then it needs a paintjob.

Keep in mind too, if lengthening or shortening the inner barrel, ensure that you have the proper porting for your cylinder.

Please explain what you mean by proper porting of the cylinder. Won't the basic cylinder work just fine?

I am in the process of upgrading a M4 variant to a SPR, 605mm inner barrel and would like more information on this as well.

Basically, just port properly. A 605mm is going to require a type-0 cylinder to operate to is best ability. I've never really argued with it, I just always followed it. From what I understand on it, having an imporperly ported cylinder requires your mechbox to use kinetic energy to move the piston opposed to using air decompression, which causes more wear on the mechbox. Like I said, that's what I got out of it. I could be completely wrong. You can buy cylinders from airsoftparts.ca with no problems. They aren't too expensive either (Just don't order just the cylinder. Order some other parts as well. Flat rate shipping. $10 for one item, or $10 for five items).

Cylinder porting is very simple. Any barrel that is 200mm-300mm requires a type-2 cylinder. Any barrel that is 300mm-450mm requires a type-1 cylinder. Any barrel that is larger than 450mm requires a type-0 cylinder. You're using a 605mm barrel, so you'll need a type-0 cylinder.

Also, to expand on Rock 'N' Roll Outlaw's statement, also make sure to not extend your barrel to ridiculous lengths. Having a very long silencer not only looks kind of odd, but you also have a higher chance of breaking the silencer off at the threads. The physics behind mechanical advantage dictate that if you bang the tip of a 41.5cm long silencer against the dirt, you have a higher chance of shattering the silencer off at the threads then you would if you bumped the tip of a 21.5cm long silencer against the dirt. The only thing that keeps a silencer is place, is the connection at the threads. Yes, longer barrels have their advantages, but if you're going too long, you're running a high risk.

Additional options available for some guns is changing out the front end kit with a longer one to hide the inner barrel in a more protective way, and then adding a smaller silencer. This is a much safer alternative to just having a very long silencer. That and it looks better than just a really long silencer. This is a great way to run a gun that stock only has a 300mm-ish long inner barrel, and you've upped it to 590mm+. You have a longer front end kit, giving it that sniper look, and a good-sized silencer to match it.

As far as them fitting "snug" over the barrel, most silencers are just a tube of aluminum with foam rings inside them. The barrel fits in there through the foam rings. I don't know if there are any solid silencers with just enough room for the barrel to snugly fit in there, but if there are, I'd assume their heavy and expensive.
