Night vision generation comparison

At the Picton Zombie game quite a few people were asking me about my PVS-14 and my thoughts on night vision in general so I wanted to post a link to this comparison on AR15.com (good resource for NV info in general) as it does a great job illustrating the difference between generations. Hopefully it can help you make your own conclusion at what will work for you and whether NV is worth the investment.

My team and I play a lot of 24 hour/night games so it made sense for me to get something but if you don't then perhaps it's doesn't.

The NVGs you guys were running were beautiful. I got to test one and it worked flawlessly. It made me want to save up for one.

Great link, I scanned through it and seeing how badly the Gen 1 NVG did, am glad to see my Gen 1 rifle scope compares to the newest generations as it picks up the IR illuminator very well in my totally dark basement and distances out in the back field.

Stick with your COD retina burners Z....

...this is an article/site that I read through a while back...I found it to be a good primer on the differences as well (might be a bit dated though).

Great links guys, Good enough info.

At picton I ran some Gen1+ I think, they were Gen 1 anyway. I had ZERO issues and my line of vision was great, both inside and outside I was laughing, good to go. I managed to get by most of the time outside in passive mode but moving into the building, active was a must. Keeping in mind that outside we had fires and such and at one point the lights in one of the buildings were on and casting light everywhere.

Where's the KABOOM? There should have been a great big earth-shattering KABOOM?

Well, back to the olde drawing board...

I have a Pulsar Challenger GS (Gen1+) and using it at the Picton Zombie game gave me similar performance to the Gen2 images in that thread. I have a feeling the ATN isn't actually Gen1+ but either Gen1 or Gen0 - because seriously, isn't the price tag on the ATN sub-$200?

You can't, at least not from a retailer.
You can buy them used in Canada, sometimes.

This review doesn't give the D-300 much respect. I've taken pictures in by basement, pitch black with just the IR on and got way better pictures. Here's one:

I just used a regular Canon digital camera. The D300 is awesome. I'd rather have a PVS14 of course but the $$$ is too much. I wouldn't mind a Mini14 Gen2SHP. That'll be my next purchase...
