It's toxic.

You need at least, a good ventilation, or a respirator.

Spray paint particules stays up in the air for a while. And it is no good in the lungs.

I guess, better be safe than sorry

I didn't mean to sound bad or anything, just, you should do it either outdoors, or in your garage with the main door open. Or your best bet, a respiratior. It's worth it. And you won't get an headache

I just came back from spray painting a portion of the gun. Instead of using a spray can, I actually used an airbrush so I can controller the amount of paint sprayed.

Before painting, I dissembled my gun, and then i used soap to clean the parts to be sprayed. I used a bit of water and a wash cloth to remove the soap. If you touch it after, it feels like butter.

I usually spray 2-3 coats with around 45mins in between each coat for drying. When I use an airbrush, I can place my airbrush really close to the gun since the PSI is only 15psi. For larger areas, I raise my compressor to 50psi and I aim my brush farther. If I was using a spray can, the can would be 3/4 of a feet away and I will lightly spray in a horizontal fashion. I never keep the can on the same spot or else paint will build up and it will look uneven and ugly when dried. Also, I let the parts dry HORIZONTALLY. If the sprayed area is left vertically, the paint will drip because of of gravity and you will see stains and a small pool of paint on the lowest edge of the part. After my 2-3 coats of paint, I use a 2-3 coats of clear matt finish to seal the paint. I use either Tamiya, or Testors. When all is dried, the paint is nice and secure and I cant even scratch it off.

Here are are some stuff I airbrushed a few months ago:

You actually painted on your hardwood floor too?

On topic, i agree. Disassemble as much as you feel comfortably doing, makes things look nicer.

Sure did...later this morning when the sun comes out I'll be going out to put on a second coat and then letting it dry outside.
