I think I will kick in my 2 pennies.

The TM M14 is great. I had some initial problems, but has run great since I got it fixed up. I've found that parts are getting harder to come by, but are still around.

The GBBR are sweet. If you want realism then look no further. I'm assuming you would be looking at getting the WE M14 if you would consider one. They take some work to become reliable. I've generally seen that you need about $150 worth of steel RA Tech internal parts at a minimum. The $42 mags make me cry every time I see them.

The P* are pretty much this years new toy. I want one myself. They are really consistent and apparently very reliable. It is hard to say how reliable they are seeing as they have been around for only a few months. They only have 1 moving part, so it should almost never break down. The P* is a good way to go if you want to make a serious DMR, you can fiddle with barrel and hop up all day long and forget about the mechbox. You would of coarse have to be fine with running a tank. I found the tank to be a bigger issue than the actual remote line. I also don't have a good backpack tanks.

Do your own research. There are a lot of forums and reviews with relevant info on ASC and abroad. There is always modifications that need to be done to any gun you buy to bring it up to speed. Buy a higher quality stock weapon and upgrade over time. "Almost" any AEG can be made quality with the right parts, but go for reliability out of the box.

Avoid a sniper rifle as it will do you no good in most situations. Avoid GBBRs at first as they are more expensive to fix/modify. Also it's harder to find parts and "good" gun doctors for them.

If a DMR is what you want, I'd personally suggest and M16. It's plain but east to find parts for, and easily maneuverable. M14's are great for accuracy but a little unwieldy indoors. As far as AEG M14's go I've heard mixed reviews on all the models except Tokyo Marui. Get a TM if you can, and the first thing you'll want to do is throw an FTK in it. That's about the most reliable platform you can get without breaking the bank. Avoid Cyma as I've never heard good things about them. But that's really my opinion.

AEG's have high, middle, and low end guns. Tested and true are the way to go. Listen to proper reviews and histories, and be careful of what retailers tell you. TM and CA are reliable out of the box, but the TM guns come under powered. Around 310 FPS on average. G&G and A&K have good externals, but their stock internals aren't reliable. People do get good low end and mid-range guns but it's not worth the risk.

Do your homework, you'll be happier in the end.

Nah; Precision inner, aftermarket bucking, possibly a steel bolt and you're all set. I also disagree on the gun doctors part, GBB's are simpler and much more mod-friendly in my opinion. Plus, since it's gonna be a DMR, you can have more consistency because you're not gonna be shooting in full auto.
A friend of mine spent twice as much as me (WE SCAR) on his DMR (a TM PSG), and even he'll admit it's just sad when he's shooting next to me.
You can get DMR consistency/precision in a GBBR, perhaps not sniper precision, but definitely DMR.
