Holy crap Ancorp that's one sweet AK, I'm talking about the rusty one. I think I have an idea on what I'll do with my AKS74U now, just need to assemble a loadout to match the beaten up look of the AK and I'll be fine.

Holy crap lots of questions. Thanks to all those that complemented the AKs.

It's my "nickname", a common name for those named Alexander.

See here (switch to Cyrillic encoding in your browser):

"Aleksandr (Александр) = Sasha (Саша), Shurik (Шурик) "

Perhaps, as earlier AKM's did use wood pistol grips. Problem is they're a real pain in the ass in airsoft form. Especially for stamped receivers. So that won't be happening. Although I have considered doing that for "Rusty", but once again, pain in the ass.

Hah, I can't compete with Inokatsu/RMW kits, those are all stamped steel, my AK's still have alloy bodies and TM compatibility. He also has real steel mags converted to airsoft, which I don't have... yet.

There IS a folding stock on the small AK...

Yes, but you won't get it back.

I'll be using "Rusty" with GP steel mags, and a Chicom chest rig.

AKM also gets steel mags, as well as a set of bakelites, an M22 Russian vest, and Berezka camo.

Cheers,
Шурик

"Rusty" makes me want an AK again

Super job Ancorp, now, if only it had the upper gas tube cover. . .

Send me the specs and I can make one out of wood for ya. To finish that thing off, no charge! I'm sure I'll have some firewood kicking around large enough to mill one out for ya.

Hey bud,
Thanks for the offer but I already have a gas tube cover. Decided to go without it.

Thanks gents, didn't expect this kind of response for the "Rusty".

Keep it up

can you pm me or put up how you created that iraqi gunstick?
i wouldn't mind making something similar, and would like to see how you went about creating it.

The polished wood and the rusted metal... I want. I agree with whoever posted above though, that pistol grip kind of detracts from the amazing look.

As my original post quickly explained:

-I took apart the gun, stripped all the metal parts of paint.

-Polished up whatever parts I could.

-Used Aluminum black to chemically finish all the parts (top cover and muzzle brake were finished with Bluing earlier).

-Used fine sandpaper to remove some finish on the edges and rivets and so on.

-Polished it a bit again to remove any straight scratches from the sand paper (not much really).

-Mixed water with a LOT of table salt, dunked all the parts in over night.

-Pulled parts out for the day, they were all rusted and corroded by evening.

-Cleaned up using water and such.

-Polished till most of the corrosion/rust is gone, and left with a nice worn out finish.

Rinse and assemble.

I did this for the following metal parts:

Body
Top cover
Bolt carrier
Safety lever
Trigger guard with magcatch
Rear sight block
Rear sight
Rear sight moving parts
Front sight
Handguard retainer
Muzzle brake

Wood - still needs work, I only wore it a bit. Used a bunch of rocks in my hand and rubbed the wood against them, as well as did a bit of sanding if I remember correctly. Then I carved my name into them and left them under water for several hours. Still needs more wear and soaking.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Alex

your project is very sucessful. I just love the simplicity of AKs. btw: what are you going to use to prevent the metal from oxidizing?
