agreed. compressed springs lose their strength over time.

No they don't. That's an urban legend that won't go away for some strange reason. There are many cases of mags being stored for decades and firing just fine. A guy I have trained with left his G26 mag fully loaded in his glove for 4 years and it worked fine.

Spring material wears out from use, not from holding a static position for long periods of time.

Because Systema mags aren't hicaps (WTF?). And many people don't use hicaps with their normal AEGs either.

I think your friend may have gotten lucky. I have noticed this effect on mags that have been accidently left fully loaded over an off season. the first game back they are unreliable and feed like crap. After leaving them unloaded for a while the problems goes away. But I deffinitly wouldnt want to keep doing it over and over again as it clearly causes issues.

I think springs wear out by holding the fully compressed position because this is not the memory position for the metal.

It is called 'creep'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creep_(deformation)

enjoy some reading.

And the smaller/thinner the spring the more you'll notice the deformation/creep/sagging out in it's lifetime. Mechanical torque wrench, pistol mag, sooner than something like a coil spring in a car.

BBs going into funnels really sucks. I've tried that a couple times, the BBs keep getting jammed up in the hole (have tried a few different funnels). Seems the only way to get a funnel to work right is to drop a few BBs at a time into it, and that's about the same as not using a funnel.

I don't use highcaps either. I don't own a single one. All of mine are low caps. You can still stick a funnel on top of the loading rod and pour them in.

That's to release the spring tension, and make sure the spring is in it's relaxed state. I assume you mean "why do we cycle it a few times on semi after playing".
