I own the SRC and the Quality is fantastic. Some parts are better than TM, and has fed reliably on any G36 mag I have come across. The gearbox has metal bushings, a slightly stronger spring and a non bore cylinder all of which are big pluses. The scope is iffy with me. I removed it and have only the iron sights and like it better. The motor has a higher whine to it than a TM eg1000 which has a more manly sound, but I found room enough to dynamat it and it dropped noise volume by 50%. The stock is solid and slides well but is somewhat noisy when clicking into position. The only real problem with it is aftermarket product which there is very little of but with creativity anything is possible.
Now for some money shot:

Limited upgrades may be something of a bonus for me; I'd really rather not have anything more than something that functions at an airsoft level, and functions reliably. Increasing FPS and all that costs money, and I figure I'll do just as well with a stock gun. Or so I hope.

Well, the limitation on upgrading a XM8 is mostly due to the lack of external attachment points. All good (SRC and... SRC?) XM8 are just a version 3 mechbox on the inside and there's no limitation on upgrading a v3 just because it's inside a XM8. It's not that expensive to upgrade an AEG either, if you learn to do it yourself.

That's a lie that people tell themself because they don't want to spend money. "Airsoft level" is anywhere from 160fps out of a springer pistol to 500fps out of a sniper rifle. It's ultimately more about safety than the any sort of conscious consensus based on the 300ish average velocity that most guns generally shoot in stock form.

Thanks.

Edit: Isn't the BE similar (of not the same) as the Firepower/Tippmann?
Edit(2): I've heard mixed reviews of the BE XM8. Not sure if I want to take a chance with it.

go with SRC
it is good out of the box, and even better if you want to diddle with the internals
all the XM8's have a weak stock, but easily fixed with metal epoxy

actually, unless you are assembling/disassembling the rifle quite a lot, you shouldnt have trouble with the stock
