We used to get the Bens 100s
it was 99.95% pure deet. Burn the legs right off the little fkrs.
The CF issue stuff is 68.5% and
Canadian Commercially available limit is 30% Deet.
The High octane stuff was good to blend with Suntan lotion.
My Dad will swear by the Watkins and 20 years in the woods will learn you a couple thangs.
Still Citronella and dryer sheets and the Permetherine all good best solution to the little flying biting bastards....

I remember going on portages when I was a teenager and using the old 90% deet mosquito repellents... they worked very well from what I recall and they were great for removing paint.

First I'm hearing that dryer sheets can used as bug repellent. Going to google this.

I use Muskol (30% DEET) and find it pretty effective.

The old thread you found from 2005 was referring to 95% DEET Muskol, which has now been banned in Canada (anything over 30%, IIRC). The 30% won't really melt plastic or anything, although it might mar the finish if you spray it directly onto the plastic. I'm extremely careful not to pray it onto polycarbonate lenses.

For heavy duty, nasty bug-country stuff, I still have half a bottle of the old 95% DEET Muskol and you can still get 95% DEET products from the US. But generally the 30% stuff is effective enough.

Dragonflies rock. I was camping near a pond once and had a swarm of them come out in the evening when a cloud of mosquitoes came for me (I could see them backlit by the sunset). Big ass dragonflies the size of a pen. Watching them zip around guylines and hunt was amazing: they're like miniature flying sharks. Not a single one of those mosquitoes got near me, either.

Deet ftw. The muskol 30% stuff works fine the old 95% stuff was super awesome but it is banned for good reason and i would only use it in extreem conditions. As far as ontario is concerned the 30% stuff is more then adewuate. Use that and a sniper veil (pre sprayed with muskol and re sprayed every cpl hours) and yer gravy.
Deep woods off also works well (i think its 25 or 28% and i think they also have one thats 30% they have a cpl different ones) im interested to try their new "dry" spray but im a lil sceptical about its longevity when sweating and such.
For the most part bugs dont bug me avoid scented soaps deoderents and such and dont wash your bdu or other camping/airsofting clothes too often and when you do use unscented soaps and or rinse twice to try n remove the smell of the soap. Think like this. If yer girl thinks you smell good the bugs will too. Nothin like a well seasoned ghillie to repell bugs lmao.

I have seen the effects of Lyme disease transmitted by ticks picked up in the Brockville area. The individual was a scuba diving buddy who can now barely walk and function without a cane or think properly without extreme fatigue. He was on direct antbiotic drip to the heart for months to try and get rid of it and it never went away fully. He has never been the same and still cannot work.


Lyme is no joke and any airsofters who hit the bush on weekends should be having their wifes or significant others check them over for hidden ticks when they get back in (plus it is a great excuse to get naked )
If you catch it within a couple of days (see a bulls eye rash), and/or find and keep the tick you can have it tested and do oral antibiotics if required to kill it before it starts to wreak havoc on your body and mind.
I would never want to go through what he has experienced.

30% deet sprayed around your pant and shirt cuffs,neck and crotch area are usually more than enough deterrent for ticks and mosquitos.

I'm grateful for all of the input - I think I'm going to try the citronella products. Maybe mix in some dryer sheets. I feel like DEET would destroy underarmour if it dissolves plastics, no?

Vitamin E capsules daily. Start two weeks before season and keep taking the whole season. Makes your skin smell unpealing to mosquitos and friends.
