Totally agree, dude. A few of us are now using Kenwood TH-G71A radios, totally unlocked at 6W, UHF\VHF. We've programmed in all the GMRS and FRS frequencies and we can walk all over anything in the field, plus we have the option of switching to private frequencies.

There comes a point when you lose patience with cheap comms. Good comms make a BIG difference in the field, especially when you're using a CnC setup where range matters.

I've tried all the cheap shit, including commercial throat mics and I find the best setup is the above mentioned Kenwood radio with the acoustic coil ear bud (Scarecrow sells 'em).

Have you actually used this? I have, and it was a POS. (That's one of my clubmates in the picture, btw). I'd say you could have mine, but I think I threw it away. They may have updated the transponders since I wrote this, (wow -two years ago, time flies...) but they'll get no more money from me. There are excellent uhf mics for around the same price as they're asking for that thing.

That being said, the world of uhf means goodbye to half-assed mic solutions... and my rubbermaid bin full of lameass mics, radios, etc.
As always, YMMV.

I recently got the FireFox Commando Edition model with the acoustic sound tube.

I've used it at the last 3 games & no problems with it at all. I thought the sound tube plug would be a bit bothersome in my ear all day. Nope, I am quite pleased with this throat mic model. To each their own likes & dislikes.

They don't sell it under the "LASH" name, they are just technology producers who provide the final product to end companies that re-brand/label the units for end users.

The original LASH unit is no longer available. LASH II is available here: http://www.swatheadsets.com/Lash/web_lash.html

Apparently "DEVGRU Communications" is the branded name of the manufacturer or retailer of the unit.

$300 overkill? Lol, you haven't been in airsoft very long have ya mate. So then what about $400+ on an EOTECH scope, or $200+ on a Magpul M4 stock?? You think it was over kill to spend $400 on a Callahan/Hellcat plate carrier chest rig too? It's all in the eye (and bank roll) of the beholder my friend.

I'm sure most things in airsoft are overkill for a 14yr old's allowance....not even sure why a 14yr old is playing airsoft, but that's a whole other dicsussion.

You are correct in that it is whatever works best for you. I've gone down the road of FRS, boom mics and cheap throat mics. Was an exercise in wasted money. UHF opened up a crystal clear world of comms and quality accessories that does make a huge difference, not to mention the added range of UHF or GMRS.

Most new players will start out with the "less expensive" route and go with FRS, which is a good place to start. But as your playing expecience grows, you might find there is a need to imporve on your comms gear, especially if you play on much larger fields where the small range of the FRS may not work too well. Guys like Illusion and Batman have been playing for many, many years and know what they are talking about. I think Bats has tried damn near every type of comms gear available at one point or another.

When you put it that way, i guess $300 for a comm setup isn't bad (and jsut for the record, i don't think spending $400 on a Callahan is overkill at all)

I've been playing airsoft for about 2 years now and i wouldn't call that long, but it's long enough for me to get a good perspective of what is and isn't overkill. But you've certainly cleared it up a bit more for me by comparing the prices of comm equipment to tactical gear (which i should have thought of before posting). As for the 14 year old playing airsoft part, things are done differently here in the US and i don't get allowance. I work for my money. Having my parents give me money to spend on airsoft and other things is wrong IMO. They give me food and shelter, and that is plenty. The least i can do is pay for my own hobby.

And for those of us WITHOUT 600$ to spend on something as frivolous as a throat mic, there's the IASUS NT2, sniper pro, and NT3.
I had the NT2 for a while and it worked great, then bought the NT3 and it's just crystal clear. And for a mere 120$
