The general consensus is go for a cyma or a tm (tm being better)

Don't think so Don't get CA M14s, Stick with TM, i think the Echo1 is based of the TM design

not sure about CAs tho but in terms of CA and their guns that are not mp5s or m4s they suck IMO

if I were to get a g&g max M4 or m16 would it do as a dmr?

Probably a good base for one yes. But out of the box probably not, but play with it and see how you like it before spending money on upgrades like this.

Depending on local field rules (here "DMR's" are up to 450 FPS single shot at 60 ft. MED) then just leave the spring compressed for a few days and see what kind of output you get. Right off the bat you'll probably want to use .28 gram BB's minimum, if not .30's.

After that, get some Prommy upgrades; purple bucking, NEO chamber, and a quality TBB (I know the prommy ones might be a bit cost prohibitive). Then you should be good.

Echo1 is a mess of V2/V3/V7 parts...

CYMA is a true TM V7 clone with better externals.

I do want to point out, that m14's are a bit ridiculous when it comes to getting to the gearbox. I know most of my friends won't even touch them (myself included).

imo, the 50 fps isn't worth the minimum engagement, and doesn't increase the range that much. 150 feet isn't terribly hard, unless you want the "one shot" deal.

Are the tightbores in the max series any good?

I would get a prommy 6.03 barrel, systema bucking, prommy pistonhead (POM) and some aftermarket nub (I'm working on one, but the best off the shelf you can get is probably the firefly buffer nub). After that, do the teflon tape/dental floss mod for the hopup, and make sure you have good compression, and you should be set.

Getting to the mechbox is not hard at all...

Getting into the mechbox is an other story...

But either a TM or a CYMA needs it to be done only once to install all the parts you want in one go. Then it will work for a few years... unlike an armalite that needs a new mechbox shell every 18 months or so...

True, but if you calculate the amount of time worked on either, you'll see the v2 will come out ahead, quite a bit imo. Version 7 is a good gearbox, as long as you don't need to work on it...

That's the WHOLE point. It is a good mechbox BECAUSE you don't have to mess around with it... EVER!

Build it out of a GBB (the WE M16 seems like a great choice)...make those noobs playing with AEGs feel like they're in a Star Wars movie :P

I'd rather have the consistency of a Star Wars laser gun over a GBBR, GBB 'Sniper rifles' are nice, but you can't be confident that each shot will land in the same place as gas is sensitive to temperature. AEG or Spring are the better of the options imho

I'm thinking a Polar Star GB in an AEG shell may be the perfect compromise. You can run a small tank and no regulator since you won't be hosing. That may become a winter project.

Proper DMR gun : A&K SR25.
It may require to change hop up unit and barrel but the couple madbull 3 in 1 unit and 407mm 6.02 barrels are magical on my JG.
