Imo, 2 point slings are good for long guns (M16/C7/AK74/AK47) and 1 point slings are good for short guns (M4/AKS-74U/SMGs).

Long guns are hard to manoeuver anyway, so the last thing you need is to have one end tied to your shoulder. Just let the sling dangle and use only when securing it to free up your hands.

Short guns can be easily manoeuvered with a one point, and it makes switching weapons, climbing ladders, admin, etc. easier.
