Silencer with foam

Hi, I just bought a Gemtech G5 silencer at Airsoftparts.ca and I read on Madbullairsoft.com that there was a Tawain version with foam and an American version without foam, since it's prohibited. So I was wondering what the foam is doing on an airsoft replica. It can't muzzle the sound since and airgun doesn't make sound from the barrel (compare to a RS). So what's the point? And why is it illegal in USA? Can it be use to work with RS? Thank you

The foam dampens the supressor shell's resonance from the slight pop the BB makes when it leaves the barrel. It works.

Oh... maybe it work on a quiet AEG, but on a WE SCAR, the blow back sound is so hard that you don't hear anything getting ou of the barrel.

And why is foam filled fake silencer illegal in the US?

I think becuase silencers with a silencing ability are prohibited in the states. I'm sure a quick google might find the answer aha =)

just as a note, on a tm m14 with foam filled silencer, the shooter could here the mechbox, but at 20 ft. i was hit and couldn't tell where the shooter was even after being hit.

we then tested out the results between silencer and no silencer and at 15 to 20 ft. you could definitely tell when the silencer was on.

To chime in as well: We had a couple of TM M14's which were really well tuned with LARGE silencers. From 10 feet away you can barely here it fire.

Found a pic from the after action, it's on the table to the left:
