Dual Channel GMRS
I would like to find a Dual Channel GMRS/UHF radio that would let me talk to my Squad with one button, and talk to my CO with another button without having to change channel every time. Does that exist?

but then question now lies in how the quality and signal strength stand up.

I have that same exact radio. Used it for one game.
Very strong signal (my friends with Cobra radios said it was very powerful) and very easy to use. No problems with it at all.

At first glance it appears that radio will not do what you are looking for. It can operate on two bands at the same time because it has dual transceivers - one VHF, one UHF. So it wouldn't be able to work on 2 GMRS channels at the same time etc...

it says it can do - VHF&UHF, UHF&UHF or VHF&VHF working modes wouldn't that mean it can? I don't know radios so this is actually a question

I read somewhere you can use any channel as long as the first one is lower than the second one....

"This is not a true dual band radio, and has only one VFO. However the ability to monitor any two frequencies the radio can receive be they VHF-VHF, VHF-UHF, or UHF-UHF is a real nice feature. Keep in mind that when a signal appears on one frequency, the other is effectively muted." So you can monitor two channels, but only one can be tx/rx... So if your lower net is busy and your commander is trying to get ahold of you, you'll never hear him. Ref: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/8172 |

Not that bad, and I guess the orange A/B button is to switch the Tx band?

Be carefull when ordering radios that they might not comply with canadian CRTC laws and could be seized. It happenned before and resulted in a large manhunt that is still going on. (see the stickied thread in the Québec section).

The A/B is to switch to the band you want to talk on. Also be advised that whenever you receive a transmission the radio stays on that band for 1-2 seconds after so if you push the button to talk you are already on the right channel. After that it goes back to the default channel (A).
I sued it to talk to people (and hear them) on the channels used by basic Cobra-style radios so it works with those.

Anyone have any issues with these so far?
Such as programming issues, poor battery life, etc? I've been doing my research and I figure I'm going to pull the trigger to buy. Oborous |

Beware, I purchased the UVD1P which is the latest revision and altought it receives both channels, it will not automatically switch the A/B channel on reply like the original UVD1 and 689E. But overall it is a very good Radio.

I wonder if a better method would be to just use 2 radios, and then some sort of adapter assuming headset use? Ie, hears both, can switch to either radio to talk on.
That way if 2 transmissions come thru, one doesnt walk over the other. Still a little confusing, but at least one doesnt eliminate the other...and you can always adjust the volume down on a less important radio, to hear the other and still be in radio contact. We see the need for something like this in games where a radio is required to stay in touch with referees, and still want maintain our team radio communications. |

Only problem so far is the volume knob that easily turns when bumped or rubbed. Makes for a nasty surprise when it goes all the way up next time you receive a message Minor problem anyway.
Next games, I will tape it down with a small piece of electric tape just to make it harder to adjust it by mistake. This might not be a problem to you depending on where you carry it (mine fits close to under my arm so it's easy for me to bump it).
