washing/maintanence for a ghillie suit.

I purchased a second hand ghillie suit off an eBay seller.

When i received it I first noticed how it didn't smell very good.

Being new and all, I have no idea on how to properly wash my suit without damaging it. It is not one of those fancy ass types that you buy made out of synthetic materials (if there is even such a thing) but one made out of what appears to be yarn? or some other sewing materials.

A forum search did not produce any results, so I turn to you all for advice. Any of which id greatly appreciate.

LOL its a ghuile suit, you're not trying to get laid in it. It shouldn't be clean. It probably just reeks from the burlap, dye and paint anyways.

No one actually cleans a ghillie suit.

You hang it outside and leave it. For a better smell hang it in a pine tree.

Its better to keep it dirty roll it in the mud,sand and rocks to make it look more natural. After a few hours in it, you get used to the odor, yes it stink but when hunting it does marvel because animal cant track you with the smell. That how I shot a moose 50 feet away last week.

hose it down, and let it dry outside, the strands will all gather together like dredlocks. Then its all that much better.

I back hosing it down outside and leaving it to dry. I did that after Sniper Hunt game at Zone 27, mainly because I did a lot of walking/crawling around sulfur smelling swamps to get to the objective. Still stinks a bit, but not as bad. And what SEALs said, the dirtier the better it works. I've run mine through mud, sand, dirt, etc. and beat the living crap outta it.

about the only time i've ever washed mine was to clean the potato smell off the burlap. but that was prior to assemby.

best solution IMHO wait for a good frost to come and leave your suit out side all night

i dont know why but it took all the potato smell out of mine and left it smelling pretty neutral. it had been sitting in the sun all day prior to that.

about the sunlight, if your going to be putting it outside, leave it in the shade, and all that fun stuff, it will help keep it its color

The cold helps to kill the bacteria causing the smell while the hot sun helps it to ferment.

Mud helps keep it's colour too. Hey, if it fades, better chance that it'll work better. Nothing worse than seeing a dark blob of funny looking colour lying in the brush.

One thing I found that worked really well with mine was dragging it behind my ride on lawn mower when cutting the grass

Lol, never thought of that, good warning on the poop factor. I've read about guys dragging by rope behind their cars down miles of dirt roads, works well if you 1/ Have a car; 2/ Have a dirt road nearby. Riding lawnmower is a cool idea though.

or you can just screw the ghilli suit alltogether, and show up early for a game, and use natural foilage. I once talked to an expert who said, if you want to look like nature, us nature! LOL

Ghillie usage DOES tend to be over-rated for airsoft, unless the game style and length makes it a benefit. I've had my ghillie for about two years now, have played at least once per month, mostly twice per month, have used it about a half dozen times (including my using it to play a Spec Ops/SWAT sniper as a movie extra). They are cumbersome, snag a lot, and slow to move around in. I've cut out a great niche for myself by going full BDUs and webbing, MP5 to hunt buggers down, and M24 constantly slung on my back. I use the M24 when the chance arises, useful for longer range shots or quiet shots, and have done the sniper role a LOT without a ghillie. Personaly, I think if you go the sniper route as a sniper/Designated Squad Marksman, you'll gain the skills from both skillsets, and will greatly benefit the way you do the airsoft sniper role. If you have a good ghillie, do the sniper role without it (often times game type doesn't make you want to lug the extra peice of gear to the car in the morning) numerous times, when you do use the ghillie, it'll work even better. Is just a tool (a smelly one at times, recall Quick Pass 2 I walked by a sitting Droc at 7am wearing my ghillie pants, he made a comment on how my ghillie stunk pretty bad) that helps you remain undetected, but it doesn't make a sniper, a "sniper". Your actions, knowledge of airsoft ballistics and fieldcraft makes you an airsoft sniper, not just a ghillie.
