Ghillie Suit Question.
I have some old camouflage netting that I cut to wear (sort of tied on with strings around the arms, neck, waist ect..
Obviously it fell apart (string wise), but while it didn't, it seemed to work rather well. If I were to get some sort of fishing net or something and sew/glue it onto a shirt that I have. Then, if I were to put the camouflage netting over the top, and then stuff foliage into the fishing net. Would it work as a sort of ghillie suit? So effectively, shirt, foliage, fishing net (or similar), Camouflage netting? Thanks in advance. |

While I don't agree with the base layer (Cape / poncho suite is best imho), this site has the right idea.

I prefer to use a one size larger BDU as a base for a full sniper ghillie suit.
But using a fishing net might work if it's the right kind of net. Like a salt water fishing net with big enough "holes" and not made of small mesh that would tangle and get caught up in everything. You need a robust net that will be easy to sew or glue to your BDU. A typical camo net (with the plastic leaf looking things) can be used, but IMO, it's a shortcut not worth taking, as it look like shit and will get you killed.

Oh. By shirt I meant something like this;
http://www.tridentmilitary.com/New-photos16/bcjb.jpg But thats too small for me. So. What if I brought something like so; http://mpmuseum.org/securuniform/com...btmk2front.jpg I can get them for about $5.00 The only reason I ask about using the netting is that really, my friends (who I play with), can't really see me anyway, just wearing British DPM w. Facepaint and Im hidden in a mostly brown area. While I would like to make a 'proper' ghillie suit, I'm not to sure I can afford all the jute/burlap/synthetic thread (whichever). Also referring the the site link. That is extremely helpful, and makes the whole thing seem a little more affordable. -Thanks. Last edited by Camowolf; December 20th, 2010 at 07:42.. |

Jute/burlap will cost you less than $10 at Home depot/Canadian Tire/Rona for a 1 or 2 yard piece about 20 yards long. It's in the gardening section, is used to wrap trees for the winter. Dye is cheap, $3 per box, Shoo-Goo is about $7, netting....... if you go the route Fox outlined, salt water fishing net, would cost about $14 for a 5'x7' piece.

Making a ghillie suit the way most snipers do it is the cheapest thing you can make. It take time though.
What they try to sell on the net is not really what people use. During the sniper course, snipers learn to make their own with material they can find themself. Not on tactical websites.
