Really happy with this as a stand-alone setup for CQB-type stuff where I don't need to carry a lot. |

What kind of machine do you use? I busted my old machine trying to sew multiple layers of webbing. |

I have a janome machine... it's slightly over entry level I think. It can punch through 3-4 layers of webbing but you have to go pretty slow. The issue with my machine is not so much the strength of the motor, it's the timing of the machine and the foot clearance. I physically can't get more than 4 layers of webbing under the foot. Also with faster speeds the needle will be pulled out of alignment because it's still in the fabric when the feed dogs start moving and the needle will likely hit the needle plate.
It will do 4 layers of 1000d cordura easily. Will max out at 2 layers plus 2 layers of webbing.

Hey guys, dragging up this old thread again - it seems like the gold standard for belts is the HSGI Suregrip. I saw there is a Suregrip Slim - does anyone have experience with this? Is there a manoeuvrability or comfort advantage over the standard Suregrip? I'm using a repro tac vest from UTG now (originally a Halloween costume piece) but when that breaks I will probably go to a belt only setup. I have a 1.5" nylon belt I picked up at my local surplus store too. Can that be used inside a padded belt, or even on its own to mount pouches?

As for your nylon belt, it depends on what type it is. A rigger's belt might or might not be stiff enough to mount things to, whereas if you have a duty belt, it's designed to be load bearing (this is what police use). And yes, typically you'd be running a rigger's belt inside of a outer load bearing belt. |

Oh god I just looked up the Ronin belts. Those look so great. It seems the Ronins don't need a rigger + padded belt so the cost doesn't seem out of line with HSGI Suregrip.
What are these cheaper alternatives you speak of though? I understand the 'you get what you pay for' concept so I'm not expecting a condor-priced belt to perform or last like HSGI or Ronin but I'm new and would like to know what the spectrum between the extremes looks like. If you look up about 6 posts, hot shot under fire makes some locally at a pretty fair cost.
UR-Tactical has some that aren't exactly the same, but much less expensive. Personally, I didn't like UR-Tactical's design decisions for their belt (the velcro was the wrong way round and they used laser cut webbing instead of regular webbing for the PALS), so I went for a custom UK-made belt by FRV Tailoring. It's not as stiff or as clean as the Ronin, but is well made and works quite well at a very good price. |
