Defining a sniper rifle

If there's a lot of background noise and commotion going on, no one is going to have a bloody clue where it came from, especially if you're camouflaged decently and changing positions after every shot (or two, given circumstances). One of the worst mistakes you can make as a "sniper" in Airsoft is taking shot placements like a real sniper. Unfortunately the guy has to be almost on top of you for your shots to be accurate, and if you miss your first one, each follow up shot is going to increase your chances of being spotted exponentially. You have to chose a good spot and fire when he isn't quite looking right at you, because if you miss and he notices that you have fired, you're going to have a wall of BB's coming your way. If you miss, lay still for a moment - if you use black BB's or if there's a lot of action going on around you, your prey may not have noticed what just happened.

I would suggest going with a well-upgraded semi-automatic AEG so if you need to make some rapid follow up shots you can do so. Having to quickly rotate the bolt in the heat of the moment can be cumbersome, whereas with the semi you can just squeeze the trigger a second time. I say M14 all the way for airsoft.

However, ask me the same question in regards to real-world sniping, and I'll tell you this: A bolt action or single-shot rifle is a true sniper rifle. Semi-automatics are sniper support weapons. The accuracy of a bolt is far superior to a semi-automatic, and in real world shooting the distances are much, much, much greater than that of airsoft - so accuracy plays a massive role. In airsoft, however, its all about practicality.

Amos - BA + black BB's = they won't know where its comming from as much as a real one would.

Yea... But you have a much harder time tracking the BB's the adjusting for wind / shitty Chinese hop up (in my case)

Edit, I own both a "Sniper" M14 and a Bolt action... There's not always going to be those moments where there's alot of commotion going on...

Half the time you can sneak up rather close, but the wind up of the motor and the little "ZIP" that the AEG's make gives away your spot completely... I've had that happen to me quite a few times...

That's the entire reason why I went bolt.

And you guys caused some complaints because of two shots per second trying to hit your targets which caused a clampdown on fps limits at the local field. Higher fps does have it's advantages, I won't argue that, but AEG usage at those velocities are often abused.

Ronan, you are bringing up "internet fact" from one single source and trying to argue against common sense/general knowledge. According to that, the M40, the M24, heck, any rifle in 7.62x51mm that is tuned for accuracy and has a maximum effective range of 1000m isn't considered a sniper rifle. Only .50cal rifles are according to that description, and most .50cal rifles aren't considered sniper rifles.

Just because someone has not pulled the trigger on a certain classification or particular fire-arm does not necessarily mean they can not know what it is or does. "Have you fired a howitzer? If not, how can you possibly know what it is or does? " Such an argument is retarded.


Stalker's right though, a lot of people have been mislead by some information found on the inter-webs of "truth". A sniper rifle can be .20 cal and still considered a sniper rifle. The general idea of a sniper rifle is that it will always hit its target at a preset range. Such a rifle should be able to knock down this target with sufficient force that only one round is required. Most sniper rifles are found in the .30 calibre range, most notably the NATO 7.62x51mm is the accepted best all around sniper round.

A sniper himself is just someone who spends 90% of his time, waiting and watching, and maybe 10% of his time shooting, there is of course a lot of training and skill that goes into making such a person efficeint at such tasks. In Stalkers case its, 40% watching and waiting, 15% shooting, 30% drinking, 5% leaving a traceable trail of ghille threads and 8% yelling ***** randomly and 2% leaving marked tampons on his victims.

The G&G (i believe) one is great, except for the lack of hop-up. Im curious if its possible to add one.

Greylocks has one, it's pretty cool, more so it uses AEG springs and is easy to swap then around as required.

The AK 47 is not an SMG (submachine gun). If this is a joke, I cant tell.

I have fired cannons, just never got around to qualify to shoot a howitzer.

I have fired sniper grade rifles (also owned some, still do) and if you want my opinion for calibers and ballistics I can give it.

The King Arms Dragunov is a superb piece of gun, but a new player may be better off with a VSR-10 (more economical).

My comment was directed to people who quote only one source, or exclusively book knowledge. There's more than enough of us here who do have 'live' experience who could gladly answer questions.
